I have shot a deer in the neck, and this year I shot me elk through the neck at 200 yards with 30-06 shooting 165 grains of lead. she dropped in her tracks, the bullet took out 2 vertibre (sp) would I do it again, only if I knew that the shot conditions were perfect like they were. heres the thing if you feel you can take the shot through the neck its your choice, and go for it

mauser06,the "magic" spot your looking for is a shot high in the lungs.The shock to the spine knocks them right down.The expansion of the bullet blows the ribs & the lungs right out.99.9% of the time deer do not get up,if they do a blind man could fowllow the blood trail.I shot a large 8 point this year facing me in the neck BUT I was shooting off sand bags.I shoot a 7mm Mag. with handload 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips.Broadside high lung shots are increadible & I would take them everytime if the animal offered it.

Just an observation I will throw out there for all to ponder. What I have noticed in this thread is every person who almost exclusively uses neck shots are from areas where 95% of the deer are less than 200 pounds on the hoof, in Va. in the areas I hunt bucks can easily exceed 200 pounds on the hoof and the only neck shot I have ever taken was on a doe that weighed about 140 on the hoof, she dropped like a ton of lead bricks, screwed up a lot of meat though.

I guess where I am going with this is it appears that in areas where deer are large, a neck shot is not one to be taken unless you are absolutely sure of the shot hitting vertabrae, and in areas where the deer are smaller it seems as though, simply due to the shock factor smaller deer can be reliably be taken with a neck shot without needing to hit vertabrae.

I know in Va. the larger deer I have skinned and butchered had large areas of just muscle in the neck that would allow for a neck shot to not take a vertabrae nor hit any major artery.

If I want to make sure a deer doesn't run I will simply shoot through it's shoulder, of course I do not havve the worries some have of a hunter being near by to steal a deer from me.

Hey guys, I took my video of me shooting that 10pt in the neck at 220 yrds and made it into a .mpeg movie file. I had to make it short and the quality of the .mpeg is poor but it is still pretty cool. I think ya'll would enjoy seeing it and it would demonstrate what every deer I have shot in the neck has done. However, there's one problem. I need an online site to host it for me. Any ideas on a free movie hosting site?

BY the way some people suck at shooting and should never try a neck shot.I have never had one run off from a neck shot but have had them run off from a lung shot.

RET, thanks for the tip. I went over there and registered and uploaded my video but the problem is, every person who wants to see it will have to go thru their registrations process. I guess that's ok but it's too much of a hassle for most folks. I wish I could find a free place where people could see it without registering. Thanks for the help.

I could see a neck shot being dead stopper only if you hit bone,either way if you hit a deer in the neck it is going to go down eventually!

thanx for the info guys...if the time comes where i need to take a neck shot i am now educated on it...and bayonet...a few people alreayd said that they never hit the spine or verabrae and they still dropped..when you are shooting a rifle that is...rifle bullets hit and send a shock through the muscle and everything..and then they expand sending the shock alot farther than the bullet hole itself..and the shock is enoguh to paralyze the game and drop it...then you hit aretries and maybe windpipe and everything else which kills it fast....
