Shooting holes in paper is alot differant than a live target.I dont care where you have been or what terms you use.Being able to wait for the shot,and placing it where you want it is the only shooting skill you need.Most see an animal and start shooting like they have a blast radious on that round.(gotta shoot before he runs away)
Most military training doesnt cover that part of it.You may hit a man with an m-16 at 500 yds-standing-in a field-after your rifle is dialed in-with no changes in the wind.And that takes alot of training and self discipline.But dont anyone think for one minute that it is the same as a live target. |

I do have to say that with the situation in SW asia, many soliders and marines, active duty and reserve have had the experience of firing on live targets and constantly perform under a level of ellevated allertness. |

ORIGINAL: Red Lion I agree with all you said except the hitting a man-size target with an M-16 at 500 yards, as most typical soldiers would not be able to do that and do not train for shooting at targets at that far of a range. As far as KP's friend the "expert", it doesn't take much to qualify as an expert marksman. I've seen recruits that have never touched a weapon in their lives qualify as "expert"...tell your buddy unless he qualified with a 240 or better, he is just average. A score of 250 is perfect (50 out of 50 in the 5 ring), and to be an "expert" all you need is a 220. Highest score Iwitnessed on any range was a 248. |

Kenman, I can appreciate that Marines have more stringent qualification standards than your typical Army solider, thats why I only spoke from a soldiers experience.

i was an good shot and a good deer hunter long before i became a soldier. Army marksmanshipdid teach me onething. It taught me the value of the sitting position.Many military folks are not good marksmen for the same reason that most cops are not good marksmen: They do not shoot enough. Some military folks are good hunters.
i often shoot on a military range. Love to put the first three shots into 1/2 inch at 100 yards, pick up my target and walk off the range showing the group to the troops. They look at each other as if to say: "Where did Gran Paw come from.'' One daymy arrogancegot me into a shooting contest with a full Colonel and i got badly beaten. The very best deer hunter i ever met was a Navy Seal and a native American. We were sitting outside the club one day drinking beer and watching some deer graze. He started crawling across the lawn toward the deer. About 45 minutes later he touched one of them. Love to hunt with him. |

Ive never been that good to crawl up on a deer but i watched my youngest son try it this past seasion.He made it about 150 yards into it and that was 40 yds from the deer.when he tried to kneel up and shoot the young buck just trotted away.That was on a freshly mowed field.I dont think the deer was afraid because my son is about the size of a big squirrel.LOL

well a soldier knows how to shoot which will increase his odds but everyone needs experience in the woods to know what to expect from the deer and stuff.

ya everyone at school thought id be crazy at paintball cuz i was a hunter but it was my first time painballing and i was no better than my friends, so i guess hunting is hunting and shooting is shooting. being good at one wont make u an expert on the other.
