Guess I'm just the opposit with my 1187. Mine came with the cantilever barrel. I just ordered the bird barrel. I shoot Winchester Partition Gold Sabots (1900fps). Why risk damage to such a nice gun? I put a Simmons scope on mine and the groups hunt3r speeks of at 150 are possible.

I have witnessed deer shot at 300 yards withs a smoothbore slug gun. Was it what I would call a resonsible shot? Nope. Does that make them a 300 yard gun? Certainly not.

I am sure there are some guns/shooters combinations out there that can shoot well at 100 yards with a smoothbore and 150 yards with a rifled barrel....but I think most people tend to exaggerate the effective distance they can accurately and CONSISTENTLY shoot those distances. You have to define 'accurately' in your own mind and I personally dont think the old addage of being able to hit an 8" pie plate is accurate. The atmosphere of a solid rest off shooting benches is alot different than a hunting situation and at the range you really should be shooting under 3" groups...and you need to do it for 10-15 consecutive shots, not get one lucky 3 shot group out of 15 tries.

Get a rifled barrel if you can and try some sabot slugs....if not then a rifled choke tube for your other barrel. If 90% of your shots will be under 50 yards in a very dense area then you may not want to even bother with a scope...or if you do get one then make sure to get one of very low magnification and a wide AOV (angle of view). I would get a 2x or even a 0x scope.

guys, thanks for all the great advice. I'm hoping to hit the lease tomorrow morning. I'll have my friend's rifle with me, since i haven't had the time to get to the range yet with the slugs.
