need advice on keeping cows away
 

ive tried barbwire,hog panels,and no fence at all.they jump or push through everything.i thought about trying an electric fence,but i dont know how deer will respond ? my kids hunted a texas wildlife area in kerr and they used electric fences. this was a high fenced 6000 acers.i'm concerned the deer had to get used to it.what would free-roaming deer do. thanks for any ideas. bob

Where I hunt there are electric fences. The does and fawns go under the bottom barbed wire alot so put the electric higher. The bucks always jump the fence. Hope that helps

I say the top two strands of wire should be electric and the bottom one just leave as barbwire.

If you were close i would come over with my yellow lab he hates cows and chases them out of the fields i hunt all the time. My buddie has a farm and a neighbor's cows got out all the time after talking to the local law enforcement allot he finally was forced to fix his fence. But before that my dog was the key to send them back home. But what the other guys said would be your best bet.

Free roaming deer have no problem with livestock fences.
Electric fencing works good. Try using ratchets to get your barbed-wire at the proper tension. Wooden fencing is best but is very costly.
The reason the cows just pushed through is because you didnt have it drawn-up tight enough.

Most farmers use electric!LOL Actually though, that is about all that will work, they like to lean on stuff, plus, if they want through, or sometimes just because it is there, they go through. I suggest a weed burner, run three lines of fence, to and bottom as a ground, and middle one hot. It really zaps the cows hard, that way they stay aay, but if the deer hit it going over or under, they won't get zapped. Just a suggestion, cause otherwise, you better build a cement wall.

im gona tell it to you straight ... you can never keep the cows away.... You can always just put up a fence around an area and make a foood plot in the center and just hunt the heavy trails around it

I've lived in cattle country my whole life, and it's EXTREMELY rare to find a cow on the wrong side of a fence. Barbed wire works. Check your local laws, if your neighbor won't keep his animals off of your place they become your animals in a lot of places. Or better yet, offer to help him build a decent fence.

i would use one but i always let the ows stay where they are. It will take movement off of you if a deer is around.

Before I would purchase anything, I would try throwing out some corn theeveningbefore to attract and hold the cows far enough away. You might try a salt block with the cows as well. It may take a few times to get the cows used to being fed and to come to the corn. It would be alot cheaper and not near the work as putting up and taking down fence if it worked.

Cows would be a major pain in the @$$! i guess that they eat everything as well? Do what we do here in Minnesota to deal with free ranging cows....distract the Sconis with brats! ;)

this is a working ranch,they feed hay to the cows and salt licks are everywhere.the only thing i have noticed is, when the cows get in my food plot they will not eat where they crap.the stuff i plant grows tall in those areas.bye the way i heard blackeyed peas are a great spring attractant. anyone else have any ideas for spring planting?

We put up a new electric wire when we first got cows on our land. It was just a single wire until we put up the barbwire fence. I watched 2 does and some fawns that night walk slowly up to it. They got within inches of the wire trying to smell it an then backed off a second and went under it. They never had a problem after than. Just keep it about waist height and the deer wont be bothered by it
