More like a 30.06 or 300 or 338
OK, a 270 andor 308 will do it.. Shot placement is important so practice and know your rifle and your comfort range.. If you have a ton of money tied up in the hunt though I would personally take something a bit bigger.

270 or the 308 are enough gun to shoot an elk, my brother shot a 51inch bull moose at 220yds with his 270 this year.Knocked him down with the first one he got up and the second one (which wasn't needed ,the first one double lunged him)put him down for the dirt nap.

there's no doubt the .270 or the .308 will do the job with proper shot placement , but there are some other factors i would take into consideration like ft lbs. of energy and velocity for your long distances. i guess i would just prepare for the extreme (.300 Weatherby mag)just in case you need it because sometimes one chance is all you get on a big time hunt. my opinion

ROTF HIA.
Check out the biggame forum always a 270 for elk thread going. Neither are the best option but both will work if you pick the right bullet and use some limitations. I will say i have shot both moose and elk with a 270 win using 150 NP's but now prefer the 7mm rem mag with either NP or Barnes TSX in the pipe. Elk are more difficult to put on the dirt then moose...I have shot my fair share of both so this is based on my experiences. Elk are just built different, even though they weigh several hundred lbs lighter then a swamp donkey.
