How long before your first deer?

I was just wondering how many years it took everyone to get their first deer, or how many years you have been hunting and have yet to get one.

You'll hate me for this, but it took me 6 hours of hunting to kill my first deer. A nice 6 point.

A buddy just shot a doe last week, his first deer. Hes been hunting most of 15 years!

Took me until my this year, my second year. It took me one hour into the season to get mine in my second year.

Probably 2 yrs...of course alot of that was in the old days before camo came along. But back then I was never really serious about hunting or knew much about it. I didn't start hunting seriously until 1996 and it took me 2 months to get my first deer. It was a doe and I was damn proud of her too.:)

Went hunting for 1st time when I was 19. My buddy put me on a layed over try on the edge of some woods near a field. Probably just to keep me away from him and the others. 20 min. later a 190 pound wide 7 pointer walked out right in front of me and BOOM! I shot him 4 times with a borrowed 20 gauge. He's on my wall and I will never forget that day.

I got a doe the first morning of my first year(12 years old) of a 3 day hunt up north with a 308. On day number 3 I shot my first buck a basket rack 4 x 3.

I shot my first deer my first time out hunting for anything. Was in the stand at about 3:00am (way too excited and way too early!) and slipped an arrow through an 8 point buck at 20 yards at exactly 7:00am. He fell right where I shot him.

First deer third hunting season. I hunted out of treestands and got the buck within 1 hour of the last day of hunting season ( and i'd hate to tell you which side of the clock that hour was on).

Boy you guys sure know how to make a guy feel bad.<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> I've put in about 8 years now with no luck. I have missed a few shots, passed on some shots, and didn't always have a lot of time for scouting or hunting in my first 3 or 4 years. I've come a long way now though and feel my chances are better then ever. I'm seeing more deer and have a lot more confidence in my equiptment. Been spending a lot more time at the range and scouting as well.

My next question is where are you all hunting? Until last year I've been hunting shotgun only in MA with a 2 week season.

Started deer hunting in 1970, did not get my first deer until maybe 1976 or 1977. Course there was not as many hunters then and I honestly do not believe that there was as many deer. But have enjoyed hunting whitetails for 32 years and have not always killed a deer but have always enjoyed my time in the Lords handmade cathedral (woods) and almost always face my stands to the east if possable to watch the sunrise.

Once you hunt the same area a few years in a row, you will find out the better places to hunt. Some spots are good in morning, some at night. Wind direction is a factor. Full moon or new moon. Sunny or overcast. All these things seem to affect the different spots I hunt.
Stick with it. Finding deer will become easier with practice. Good luck.

It tookme about 30 minutes into the hunt on my first time I could carry a rifle. I had been going with my dad for about six years before that and only got to learn how to hunt, not carry a gun. Here you must be twelve years old to carry a gun in deer season.

this is my first year hunting, i went out last saturday and this saturday and havent got a deer.

i dont see why people only go for bucks though...if everybody shot a buck there would be none left.

I killed my first deer in my second year of hunting 1981, when I was 13 years old, a decent 5 point buck. I killed my first deer with a bow, a 4 point, my second year bowhunting which was in 1986.

first day of second season I killed a doe. The first day of first season i missed the biggest deer I have yet to see while hunting. A huge 12 point in Ohio came with in 20 yards of my stand. I was 10 years old and shooting a single shot .410. I found out what buck fever was at a very early age. My uncle killed that same buck 5 days later and it scored in the 170's. Oh well.

While I was in the service I hit one with my truck does this count? Sence I started hunting I think my first one was about three years. I've know some guys that have been hutting for 18-20 years and still have not gotten one. The best advice I can give is have confidence and learn!!! Its not the kill thats important its the hunt.

Near the end of my first season I killed a doe on Jan 1, and a 9 point on Jan 2 of 86 when I was 16. I missed one doe earlier in the year and then I ended the season off great.

RE: How long before your first deer?

I took my first deer when I was 20, a nice 8 pointer. I had been hunting about 6 years. This was in 1982. Back then if you saw a deer in Northern NY, you called the neighbors and told them about it. At our camp in the Adirondack mountains I only remember seeing one deer ever. Nowadays, you have to shoo them out of the bird feeders and wait for them to move out of the driveway before you drive in. Driving 55 at night on our back roads is just inviting an accident.

I have a friend from our church who took a deer when he was 16 and he hasn't gotten one since, and he is retired, late 50's to 60's. Now that's perseverance!

RE: How long before your first deer?

kinda lengthy, but worth it

i hunted for three years in the mountians of eastern PA. all the other hunting camps had deer, ours had squat! i hunted with the type that only went into the woods the 2 days we were in town to hunt and NEVER did any scouting. actually, one of the members lived up there, but he didnt care about hunting. he stayed at the camp just to get away from the ol' lady and drink. our routine was go out opening day in the morning, hunt till about 10am, come in for lunch, nap and then go back out around 3:30. repeat the same thing the next day and then go back home the day after that. we spent usually a total of say 11 or so hours afield out of two weeks available. i finally said &quot;this is insane, im getting a deer with or without these guys.&quot; so i started talkng to real hunters and explored my options. needless to say, i took advantage of the late season that year. opening day we got about 12-14&quot; inches of snow, but i was determined. on the way in i saw a heard of deer and i almost had a heart attack, it was the first time i had ever seen deer in the wild. about an hour later 2 more walked by about 70 yards away. i was shaking so bad i couldnt help but miss. i returned the next day and had my first kill within an hour. i have hunted with the same attitude since and have seen plenty and always filled a tag! to recap, scouting is very important, the more time you spend in the woods the better your chances and talk to other local hunters. they are there, you just have to find them.

RE: How long before your first deer?

I got my first deer (doe) my first yeer hunting, but i always went small game hunting & knew where the deer were. But it took me 7 years to get my first buck, and 9 yeers to get my first deer with a bow.
Like the others said it takes time to understand the deer.I now started keeping track of the wind, clouds, time& surroundings when ever i see a deer, and it has made a big difference.

I was 12 years old and 3 weeks into my first season hunting solo before I tagged my deer. I saw plenty in those 3 weeks, but I wanted a large non-bearing doe.

i belive 2 years. then there was another 2 or 3 before i got another one.

I've passed on many shots on does. have screwed others up. Today i was kicking myself in the butt. I had forgotten to send in my doe tag thing on time so i never got a doe tag. Wouldn't you know it, all day long i saw doe.
