RE: Keeping a deer cold
If it is too far into a town with a butcher shop, I would cut the deer up and put it in a couple of ice chest with plenty of ice. Be sure to carry extra ice because a lot of the first you use will melt while cooling the meat. Put the ice chest in the shade somewhere.

If you get one in the afternoon hours and the nights are getting down in the 30's or even 40's and get it chilled out good then it can take a little warm temperature and still be OK during the next day, just be sure and hang him in the shade and where you might get a little wind on him.
