A first year deer is not necessarily a spike. Depending on how early in the year he is born, genetics and nutrition a first year deer can have multiple points. The age of a buck does not relate to the number of points (5 points = 5 years). The same factors determine the size rack a buck has each year. Another factor in antler development is post rut condition of the buck. If it is a long breeding season and the buck is stressed the size rack can be influenced.
