Which is a better Deer Gun???

My Dad has had a .308 and a 30-30 in the the gun cabinet ever since I can remember. I just started Deer Hunting this past year and was wondering which one is a better gun to use. One is Lever Action and the other has a 5 round clip not sure which is which. Not even sure what the makes are. Looking at putting a scope on one of them. Any info on nice scopes would be helpful too thanks. And for those who were wondering I did shoot a nice Doe this year I used a 12 GA. 870 Remington Express.

they are both good guns both would kill a deer. if you are hunting close range or are recoil shy then go with the 30-30. If you are going to shoot beyond 150yrds then I would go with the .308

More than likley the 30/30 is the lever action and the 308has the clip
Even so the 30/30 will hold five to seven round's.
I agree with muzzleman it all depends on where your hunting,They will both do the trick.
The 30/30 is limited to 100yds and a little further. If you choose the 30/30
I would sight it in at 1 inch high that way if by chance the deer is a little farther than 100yds you would still get a good clean shot on it.
Take them both out a shoot a few rounds thru them and see which
feel's more comfortable.
Good luck in your quest.

The 30-30 is a good beginning gun. It has low recoil and will kill a deer out to 100yards. If you want to shoot a little farther, use the .308. As for scopes, take a look at the Bushnell/Banner Dusk and Dawn. I recently purchased two of these scopes in 3X9X40. They work great in low light. Also, they were only about $75 apiece.

I agree with the comments above. However, you're using the word "clip" improperly. The word you should be using is "magazine". Not that it really matters, but that is the proper name. Just though you may like to know.

Thanks for the info so far, Once I thought about it is the 30-30 is the lever action. Recoil doesn't bother me much just would have to get used to shooting them which iswhy I am asking opinions now. I do plan on shooting both to see which is comfortable. But without asking I would have not known that the .308 reaches farther. Thanks again.

You can check and compare ballistics at www.remignton.comor www.winchester.com or www.federalcartridge.com . The .308 is clearly the more capable cartridge. The .30-30 will work fine, but as others have said, is more of a short-range type of cartridge. Shoot them both and have fun!

I would go with the .308 because I hate lever actions, and the .308 has a little more umph. Also, my main reason is because the .308 is probably a bolt action because you said 5 round magazine, and you're only gonna be able to take one shot so why not use the most accurate action available?

I'd probably go with the 30-30 but I'm biased. Something about a lever action rifle that fascinates me. Call me old fashioned. The 308 is an excellent rifle too but if I had to choose one I'd go with the 30-30. If your shots are longer though I'd go with the 308.

If you can shoot a 12 gage 870 express then a little old .308 will be no big deal.
