Odds are the .30-30 is either a Marlin 336 or a Winchester model 94. the .308 w/the 5 round mag could be any of anassortment of makes and models. I like the .308 caliber over the .30-30. Rifles chambered in .308 are on short action platforms, and most .308's I've seen are light, handy rifles; "youth rifles" if you will. Certainly nothing wrong with the .30-30 caliber, but everything it does inside 100 yards, a .308 can do; and do it to well over 250 yards. That being said, if your Dad has both, I guess you dont have to "choose" in the first place.

i agree with everyone else, you should go w/ the 30-30 for short range and the 308. for long distances.

Thanks again everyone for your opinions. The reason I know so little about the guns is like I said earlier I am new to Deer Hunting and the rifles have been in the gun cabinet forever, at my Dad's house. I feel kinda silly being 28 yrs old and not knowing much about them. But hey you dont know unless you ask. I plan on picking them both up from his house this weekend and running some rounds through them. And to think all these years I spent 100% of my time Duck and Goose hunting. Which by the way I will never stop ,but Deer Hunting for sure will be in there as well now!!!
