RE: Thought Deer was Done
Well, you live and you learn. Very unfortunate story, the deer might suffer a slow death, but now you know what NOT to do. Always learn, especially from your mistakes!

RE: Thought Deer was Done
well now i now if i wouldve new i was gonna take a long shot i wouldve brought the 270 but i was told i was gonmna get a 50-60 yard shot till some dogs came through that area and pushed the deer to a diff spot..
If i wouldve known it wasnt big enough i wouldnt have done it if dont believe me thats fine...but you should since I took the 45-70 ( a lil overkill) |
RE: Thought Deer was Done
Oh...I don't doubt it, I'm actually on your side bud. I've done many things wrong in the woods. I learn from all of them. That's all I saying, learn from your mistakes. Now you know better.

RE: Thought Deer was Done
i know wat you mean.
it was just almost dark the last day i could go the gun was there the deer was there it would be my first deer of my not good season |
RE: Thought Deer was Done
You should check the regulations to see if that was even legal to shoot that deer with that gun, here in Iowa, it has to be .24 or larger, so pretty much a .243 or 6mm is the smallest gun you can use for deer. You just might have poached that deer and broadcast it all over the internet!

You've learned a lesson! Move on!

RE: Thought Deer was Done
stupid idea shotgun a deer with a 204 ruger, hate to see deer go that way...

RE: Thought Deer was Done
You were poaching if you were in OK
From the OK dnr “Legal Means of Taking Rifles: Centerfire rifles firing at least a 55-grain weight soft-nosed or hollow point bullet and having an overall cartridge case length of 1 1/4 inches or longer (9mm rifles are not legal). Clips or magazines of all .22 caliber centerfire firearms may not be capable of holding more than seven (7) rounds of ammunition.” They don’t make the 204 that big (55grain) that I have seen. |
RE: Thought Deer was Done
You should have waited longer before going to retrieve it. 20 minutes no matter what. If you hit her in the shoulder she'll surely die. It doesn't sound like you hit her perfect though. She could have been stunned. I'm guessing it was a neck shot. The shock always dropsthemright there but they can recover rather fast if not hit in a major artery or the windpipe. That's my best guess without being there. Sorry to hear about the loss. Better luck next time and I hope you learn from your mistakes.
