Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I was curious as the the average size/weight of bucks and does in your neck of the woods?
I am more curious in weight, but feel free to give an idea of racks as well. In Minnesota I would say that an averagemature doe will go in the 130-150lbs dressed and a mature buck about 190-210lbs dressed. Thanks. |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
average weight would be about 120-140 prolly for does and bucks. and the racks done usually get ne bigger then a 6 point. all the farmers usually shoot them off
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
Our bucks and does are around 120-150lbs. The racks are anywhere from 6 to 10 on a mature buck. We have antler restrictions here so a buck has to have atleast 3 points on one side in the east part of the state and 4 points on one side on the other so we are seeing alot bigger racks on out deer. I wish that had more mass to the antlers though.

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
avg doe goes from 80 to 120,on the hoof,120 is rare...bucks go 140 to 250 on the hoof...racks,120-130 is a good buck,150 160 pretty rare
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
A big buck can go from anywhere from 200-300lbs and doe about 150-250lbs dressed out. But it really depends on what time of year.

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I don't know about live weight, but we've weighed a lot of field dressed deer over the years...
Here in Steuben County, NY, a 1.5 year old buck will usually dress out from 100 to 120 pounds...A 2.5 year old will weigh from 130 to 150 dressed.. Anything over 150 is a 3.5 year old or older...Typically a mature buck will weigh 150 to 175, dressed... I've hunted here since the early 60s, and the heaviest buck I've ever seen on the scales weighed 185 dressed, and he was killed early in bow season when he was rolling in fat.. I've heard reliable reports of local bucks that dressed over 200, but I have yet to actually see one...Most 200 lb + bucks reported around here were weighed with the EYEBALLS rather than with the scales... Any doe around here that weighs over 100-110 dressed is a pretty big doe... |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
A 1 1/2 year old buck or doe - 125 lbs or so on the hoof, maybe 40 lbs boneless meat.
Does top out around 150 or so. 2 1/2 buck would be in the 150-160 range, 3 1/2 in the 180 range, and top out right around 225-250 lbs for a heavy buck. |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
150-180 lbs, is about average around here.
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
My 3.5 yr old buck dressed 185# this year and his head was still touching the ground.. andI witnessed one dressed at 215 right after... was a narly non typical...

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I am from new york.
The average doe is between 120-160 The average buck runs from 100-180 Reason for such a low weight is too many outsiders on public land. They take deer way to soon. Average age for a buck in my area is 2.5. sucks hugh |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I killed a doe a couple weeks ago that was dressed at 180 ibs. Bucks are fairly large, there around 220-250 ibs at 4 years. I live in ohio by the way

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
A 250 lb doe?! My dear sweet Lord. I need to come to Canada. I killed one down here in Alabama this year that weighed MAYBE 160 lbs and I thought she was a fatty. That's insane, but I don't doubt it.
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
Probably 150 for does and 180 for bucks--live-- around here. That's just an estimate but it seems fairly predictable.
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
35-40 pound swamp deer and maybe a 100-130 hill deer. Killed a cowhorn spike that weighed in at 35 pounds and killed a 4 point weighin in at 115 so its all where you hunt and rack size is your lucky to kill anything above a 5 point.
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
blacktailbucks on my property usually weigh 100-150lb dressed. but i have never shot a doe mainly because i feel there are not even fair chase and you cant shoot does in ca unless you go on some management hunt.

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
We weigh all of the deer killed live weight and the biggest doe we have weighed was last year and she was 143, average weight is about 100 for does. Biggest live weight buck I have ever seen weighed was 310, but most bucks run about 190. This is in south Alabama.

average mature doe 135-150 175max average mature buck 185-215 250max 18-22" 10-12pts seem to be norm. Massive 14's is commonly seen. Kentucky is known for it's non-typicals some are truly a rare sight. |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
Bucks usually dress around 220-250 in Canada and 150-180 in Wi.

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I weigh nearly every deer I kill in WV. I've also worked with a butcher and at a school that cuts up deer during hunting season. Let's just say that I've weighed well over a hundred deer.
The largest was 291# dresses...an 8-pt from Ohio that had a 25" spread. The smallest was 34#. My roommate in college shot it at my farm in WV. It was his first deer with a bow. Not one of his bigger trophies, but a clean ethical kill. I'd say the average doe in WV is 85-100#, and the average ADULT WV buck being 115-130#. Most 1.5yr old bucks in WV go about 100#. The largest WV deer I've seen and weighed was one I killed in 1988. It was 178# on a good scale. It was an old 8-pt that scored only about 118". In Ohio, at least where I live, the does have a huge size range. I've seen 3 1/2yr old does that weighed 100lbs...and I've seen a couple that were pushing 185#. Of all the deer I've seen weighed, the biggest doe was #189. She was an absolute monster. Ohio average...does 120-140....bucks 160-200#, with many bucks going over that number. I will say one thing....people's weights of their deer is over-guessed more than most fishing stories. I've seen guys hanging out at our butcher's shop talking up a deer's weight to nearly 300#, and on the scale it'll tip out under 175#....it's humbling as hell. LOL |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
a mature buck would field dress about 200 pounds. the doe i shot this year dressed 130. the racks depends on genetics but there are some big bucks. ive seen some really nice 2 1/2 already 10pt. so they will get big if no body shots them.
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
In my part of PA, a doe will run 100-130# dressed with a few real big ones pushing 140#.
1.5 bucks run about 115-130, with mature bucks topping out 185 to low 200# |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I would say our does go about 75 to 120 and the bucks averaging 150.
I don't want to even guess what the "High Fences" weigh in at. |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
Our avg doe is about 120 and avg buck is about 170. The buck will have a rack that looks like a yearling from the Northern states. A good 8 pointer here will have 12 to 16" spread and 7-10" G2's.
I have taken a few over 200lbs, but very few. |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
Texas Hill Country, mature does' live weight averages about 85-100 lbs. Mature bucks, depending on the time of season, run anywhere from 120's to 160's live weight. They're heavier earlier in the season, but, run off a lot of weight chasing does. The heaviest buck taken in the last 5 years was 183 lbs. No others have been above the 160's.

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
We don't judge ours by antler measurement, we judge them by body weight.
|
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
The avg buck goes 165-175 pounds dressed but many well over 200+.
And the does go about 120-125.... Of course the bucks I miss are probaby in the 400-450 pound range...;) |

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
We weighed 3 mature bucks killed on the same day in 05. After being field dressed they weighed in at 232, 234 and 236. My buck this year was 205. My does were 140 and 165. Fatty girls!!
We found one on our property, the third day of gun season, that was a little over 300 pounds!! We hooked the scales to the bucket on our tractor to weigh him. I have pictures of him, just haven't figured out how to post them yet.[:@] I saw him on two different occasions when bow hunting. He was probably 6 1/2 years old and had a neat funky rack. We are having a European mount done but were afraid of the meat. We thought he had been dead a couple of days but not sure.....we seem to have a problem with poachers in our area...this was the 3rd buck we found. Diann |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I hunt central Maryland. Average doe is probably 85-110 dressed and bucks 125-150. I think I've done good on the small farm I hunt when I take anything over 85 pounds. The state record was broke this year in southern MD by a buck that will probaby score 260+ but only weighed about 165 pounds. This buck looked like it had a forest on its head for antlers.

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
ORIGINAL: GregH You got that right! I too weigh all of my deer, I started doing this in 1992. EVERYBODY thinks that they have shot a 200 lb. deer. I'm usually 5 lbs or less when estimating the deer my friends and I have shot. If anything, I'm on the conservative side of estimating weight and score. I don't like exaggeration. I found something different doing this. My heaviest wis. deer weighed 190 and 193 lbs. My heaviest Ill. deer was 220 lbs. A good 3 1/2 from Ill avgs 195-205, where as in my wis. spot, one will avg, 175-185 lbs.. The weird part is that these two spots are less than 40 miles apart. The same food, climate habitat etc. Must be the genetics!? I agree that most people drastically over estimate the size of their deer. Both in weight and in rack score. But I can tell you that my estimates for the average sizes are pretty close forthe areas I hunt. Like you said Greg, its genetics. The deer I hunt in Canada have developed large body sizes over the years due to natural selection. The winters are hard, and there are lots of wolves. When out hunting, it is not uncommon to see the body of a deer and think it is a buck, until you see its head and its bald. It an amazing sight that I am blessed to be able to enjoy every fall. |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I'm outa Central NY, I also have scales that we weigh all our deer on and the following is what the averages are here.
Buck 1.5yr old 115 to 125 usuall 4 to 8 pointer 2.5yr old 135 to 150 usually 6 to 10 pointer 3.5yr old 150 to 170 usually 8 plus from here 4.5yr old 175 to 190 5.5 and up 180 to about 205 is tops These are dressed out weights.( All guts organs removed, hide head on) For does nock 23% off those figures. The biggest I have seen with my own eyes weighed here was one I took in bow a few years back, it aged at 5.5 years old and weighed 186 dressed on DEC scales. |
RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
I would say the biggest doe I have ever heard of on Otsego Co. Ny is 153lbs..i would say the majority of bucks in my area of Ny are 120-160's....my brother last year got a 195lb 10 pointer.....we weight them on a good set of scales.

RE: Average Deer Size in Your Neck of the woods?
Good post, Pro-Line! I'd say 80% of hunters out there really have no clear idea what their quarry actually weighs, or scores when we talk about antlers.
I used to work in a taxidermy shop where we took in a lot of bears. The average hunter (and I mean average, because the extremes were even worse) considered their 175 lb. bears to be 300-pounders. We could lay out a 125 lb. bear and have guys walk in and call it a 300-pounder. Maybe it's not quite so bad with deer, 'cause they aren't scary like bears, but it's close. (I had a college buddy who came in from antelope hunting reporting that he had killed a 180 lb. dressed weight antelope doe! Wow. The world record antelope buck probably didn't weigh 3/4 of that live.) Anyhow, to the main question. Here in MT I hunt two subspecies, one western and one eastern. The eastern strain will weigh a little more and have a little more antler size, but the difference isn't great. For western MT, where I've gathered by far the most data: Bucks 1 1/2 years old75-95 lbs. dressed 2 1/2 years old100-130 lbs. dressed, 75-105 gross antler score 3 1/2 years old 140-170 lbs. dressed, 100-130 gross antler score 4 1/2 and up 170-maybe 240 lbs. dressed, 110+ gross antler score; Does All ages 70-110 lbs. dressed, 0 gross antler score (gotcha!). My bucks (dress weights approximate): '003 1/2 y.o., 160 lbs. dressed, 111 gross 10-pointer, western MT '02 3 1/2 y.o., 185 lbs. dressed, 123 gross 8-pointer, eastern MT '03 3 1/2 y.o., 145 lbs. dressed, 109 gross 9-pointer, western MT '04 4 1/2 y.o., 195 lbs. dressed, 144 gross 10-pointer, eastern MT '05 4 1/2 y.o., 185 lbs. dressed, 135 gross 8-pointer, eastern MT '06 6 1/2 y.o., 170 lbs. dressed, about 110 7-pointer, western MT. My '03 and '06 bucks were taken at the tail end of the rut, and both bucks probably had lost 10-15% of their body weight. |
