Not a deer, but I still scored.
I went deer hunting yesterday morning and about 7:15 a beautiful red fox came down my creek bottom and stopped broadside, 40 yards away.
I was carrying my BLR 308 and put the crosshairs right on the bottom of his belly, about where his belly-button would be. I grazed him perfectly, and he fell on the spot. The bullet actually field dressed the fox; splitting him from sternum to anus and dumpin all the guts on the ground, leaving a perfect "field-dress" type slit along his underside. The pelt stayed in tact with vertually no damage. The shock wave did dislocate both of his back legs, but that shouldn't matter. I'm gonna have him full-body mounted. This was a beautiful red fox; almost as bright as my hunter's orange vest. He weighed about 20-25 lbs and was probably 4 ft long from the tip of his tail to his nose. His ears and feet were black, everything else red(orange). I can't wait to get my mount back! |

How did you manage to get that to happen with a broadside shot? Doesn''t make sense.

RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
Honestly, I'm not quite sure how it happened. The only thing I can figure is that with such a small animal the 308 just barely knicked him, and the shock wave just blew it out of him...I dunno? The intestines were still attached to the anus, but hanging out, and 1 kidney was still in him, but other than that, everything was laying on the ground next to him...it was the strangest thing I've ever seen from a bullet wound. And the wound looked almost surgical. I was very surprised. And looking at him, I couldn't find an entrance or exit wound. The only thing I could figure is that the bullet just grazed him, and opened him. I dunno? But man, I was very happy. This was my first fox.

Congratz, I want to get a fox sometime:)

thats awesome man! You got a picture of him?

RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
Congrats on getting a fox, but your story has some small problems. Why would you intentionally aim for a gut shot? Put the crosshairs on his bellybutton? Come on. Nobody does that. If it was a broadside shot, it sounds to me like you made a bad shot and concocted the story afterwards. Second, how does a shot aimed to go through from side to side end up with a lengthwise wound? And, you just grazed him, but the "shock wave" dislocated his hips? From the description of the wounds and injuries, it sounds to me like it wasn't a broad side shot, but a walking away shot, entering just below his anus, along the belly, and exiting at just before the sternum. If I'm wrong, I apologize, but, I watch CSI a lot, and that is the inference from the evidence.

Stranger things have happend but couldnt pass up the CSI comment. ![]() |
RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
ipscshooter,
i'm sorry my story doesn't make sense to you. i missed the CSI episode where someone shot a fox, which you're basing your opinion on. but he was definitely broadside. i shot the belly b/c if you shoot a 20 lb fox with a deer rifle at close range and hit anything solid, you dumba$$, it will blow it all to pieces. I didn't want to do that. The whole point was to just graze his soft belly and do as little damage as possible. I too was surprised how the bullet split him like that from front to back on the broadside shotl...that's half the reason i made my post. I guess it's like shooting a milk jug that's full of water at close range. no two rips in the side of it will be the same, but it will definitely blow the water out at surprising angles. BTW, Just Curious - CSI seems to be so influential with you...Do you make healthcare decisions based on episodes of Grey's Anatomy? |
RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
I have done the same shot on coyote and even a pine martin to get mounted ,no damage to the hide but a little ugly to clean up. [/align] |
RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
HAHAH ths78, Greys Anatomy is the dumbest show I have ever seen.
|
RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
OKay...just on the notion of being ethical...who the hell aims for a gut shot...oh wait for the mount...So on this assumption I should shoot a deer in his a$$ hole if I intend to do a full body mount? Just going by the conversation...
Choose the right weapon for the quarry...or dont shoot if you cant make it an ethical kill... Again just my worthless 2 cents... Frankie |
RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
If I was shooting a fox with a .308 and I wanted to get it mounted I would do the same thing. A shot to the shoulder would destroy it. A low gut shot would do less damage and kill the animal just as quick. You have to remember your dealing with a pretty small critter, it's a little different than shooting a deer in the guts.

I guess I'm just not the kind of marksman that is good enough to try to make a shot with the intent of "just grazing his soft belly". You can paint this little picture any way you want butintentionally gutshooting any animal is unethical. Like I said, I'm not that good; and, I doubt that you are that good either. I too was surprised how the bullet split him like that from front to back on the broadside shotl...that's half the reason i made my post. RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
well for one if u are deer hunting with a 308 y the he<< would u want to shoot a fox to no GUT shot will kill an animal as fast as a ethical double lung i mean damn im only 20 and it seem that i no a heck of alot more then u man im not sure where ur from but obviously its somewhere that dont kill BIG deer cause here in IL we do kill big deer public or private u hunt hard enough u can kill a 150-160 incher but back to the gut shot Lefty26 u really should stop hunting if u believe one once of what u said never take a gut shot and dont shoot a fox while deer hunting if u want mount it DUMBA$$

RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
First,
I don't know if I would insult someone else's intelligence if I couldn't figure out where to put a period or construct a basic sentence in an entire post. Sounds like you should have hunted less and spent more time in school. i now i isn't en anglish wiz, but gorsh i kin do beter then that. Second, I don't know where this guy was hunting, but in Mississippi, it is totally legal to shoot foxes and bobcats during deer season. So, we do. Helps tremendously w/ the quail and turkey populations and would not be considered poaching. Hank |
RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
So much drama over one little fox. You shot it, it died, your getting it mounted. End of story for me. Congrats man.

RE: Not a deer, but I still scored.
it sounds to me,if you intentionally make a gut shot...ur a dumb a$$...wut if u hit a little lower, his inerds fell out and he ran off,ive seen if b4 so dont argue that its impossible, all im saying is that you need to be ethical b4 u make bad shot on purpose...a friend of mine saw a 11 point on the road side, been hit by a car,he eneded it quickly by a head shot, even tho he wanted it mounted,ur the kind of person that gives hunters a bad name.
