You Call The Shots IX

Weapon:.30-06 w/ Iron Sights
Range:80 yards
Conditions:Morning; Clear
Winds:Heavy 15-18 mph / Left to Right
The Scoop: You have been waiting him out for some time. He was down in a valley bedded and just came up the ravine. There is a stiff wind to think about. It is early morning, so you may havea few more stalk oppurtunities. He is a nice one though.

With Iorn sights and heavy wind........I will hold and try to stalk closer for a better shot. Sorry if I am to conservative for one's liking.

I would pass the shot. My eyes aren't what they used to be.

80 yards on iron sights is pretty difficult I would imagine, I would prolly try to sneak around for a shorter distance shot if at all possible

that's pretty stiff for me. i think i'd pass.

Personally, i love iron sights and i think i could easily make that shot

RE: You Call The Shots IX

I would have to pass on that shot. Too far away without a scope.

80 yards with a 30-06? Even with iron sights and some wind, that's a doable shot. I'm pulling the trigger aftermaking aslight adjustment to account for the crosswind. He's down, no doubt.

RE: You Call The Shots IX

i'd account for the wind and send one in his direction. I'd be eating well.

That is my story Sunday, the last day of deer season in Kansas exceptI had a 30-30, I passed the shot and have been ?ing myself since. My guy did not stop though he just walked right along a tree line right out of my life.

Very doable Shot.

Im pretty good with open sights not to brag or anything but he would be down thats not to much wind, here in nebraska you almost never have a day without the wind like that so like I said he would be down.

put on the front of his shoulder and squeeze, game over, besides if you carry a weapon with open sights you should be good enough with it to make just about any shot within 100yds...

RE: You Call The Shots IX

That close wind it's that much of a factor, maybe just slightly adjust to the left

SRBowman 12-14-2006 07:14 PM

RE: You Call The Shots IX

Yeah I agree with you! If it had a scope I would shoot for sure, but the iron sights make me think to much about it!

Dead deer.

I'll try to sneak in for acloser shot at him.

RE: You Call The Shots IX

That would be an easy shot. A 15-18 mph wind is not that much of a wind. There would be no need for wind adjustment with a .06 at 80 yards.

I don't practice enough with iron sights to take that shot.

Depends on the irons! I have some that I would not hesitate. I have some that are not very clear at that distance. The irons on my 30.06 aren't great.. so i'd pass if i had my '06.... then again... i do have see throughs w/ a scope on that gun....
pass.

hold a few inches left and BANG!

My 1st rifle was a Rem 30-06 with iron sights.I knew that gun better than my wife.A Duck shot at 80yrds.IMO - Forget the wind at that range w/06.

RE: You Call The Shots IX

80yds is not bad at all for a 30.03 with irons.......muzzleloader hunter do it out to 150.

Let er rip!

Iron sights and 80 yards = dead deer.

I'll pass!

I would put the sights right on the shoulder and let him have it. Even if the bullet drifted 6 in it's still in the vitals.

younggun308 12-15-2006 02:45 PM

RE: You Call The Shots IX

I would take the shot, at only 80 yards I think that a .30-06 could handle it even with wind. It would be a doable shot, but I'd have to make sure that I'm calm when I take the shot.

RE: You Call The Shots IX

I'd stalk him, its early morning and with iron sights and heavy wind thats a no-no.

RE: You Call The Shots IX

If this 06 had peep sights, and was a bolt action, and I had a rest aim or the opportunity to kneel, no-brainer, he's down.

RE: You Call The Shots IX
