Settle this conflict...someone

My first buck was this 9? pointer 8? pointer. I say that the top left antler...where the tip is, splits and it is another point. Does this count as a point? Some say no. I need some closure here. Is this an 8 or a 9 point

Please Advise.

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

Does he have a brow tine on that left side? If so he is an 8 if not he's a 7. That split on the end of the left main beam has to be an inch protruding from the main beam which it does not, 8 at the best, congrats on the buck though nice one.

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

I call a point anything you can hang a ring on so in that definition it is a 9 point. Some people say points have to be 1" in length so in those terms it would be an 8 point. Nice buck no matter what you call it. Congratulations.

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

I'll call the lower point the main beam and give you a longer G4.Nice start .

CervidSlayer 12-06-2006 02:29 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

Yea, he has 2 brow tines...you cant see one of them cause of the picture. I heard that if you can hang a ring on it, then it is a point. Is there like an official standard that measures these things?

Hiawatha 12-06-2006 02:35 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

Yes officially it has to be an inch long.

CervidSlayer 12-06-2006 02:42 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

Here is another angle...I doubt it helps

buckhunter14 12-06-2006 02:43 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

I would say nice 8 point. Nice buck anyway!

tschammel 12-06-2006 02:55 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

No that is not an extra point on the tip of the left beam. It has to be an inch long. It is a nice 8 pointer. Now whoever said it was a 9 pointer pay up!

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

It depends on what context you are asking about. Forscoring purposes, yes, it has to be an inch long. Here in Oklahoma at the check stations, they want all points that are longer than they are wide and can hang a ring on. So...there's your answer. No and yes. Both groups are correct.

I wouldn't look down on you if you called him a 9. I would make fun of you behind your back though. :) j/k

bigcountry 12-06-2006 03:21 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

Since, I could care less about scoring, I call it a 9. I call any point you can hang a ring off of a point.

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

boone and crocket says it need to measure an inch for it to count, but the old times consider haning a ring from it, its which ever you want.

Chantecler111 12-06-2006 03:41 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

IMHO, its a 9 point, but some will call it an 8 point.

JimmyMo32 12-06-2006 04:13 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

hell its you buck man... call it what u want.. i would call it a 9 point without a doubt.. you arent having it officially scored and put into the state record books... if its got a point.. then it is a point.. its a 9... nice buck man

Matt/TN 12-06-2006 04:25 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

i count it as a 9

dayna0306 12-06-2006 05:13 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

If you like we will call it an 8pt. with a rather shortdrop tine

erope 12-06-2006 05:26 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

I shot a 10 pointer that has 3 little stickers around the base of the antlers (not coming off the main beam). Would those count as well or do they need to come off the main beam? Basically, it's either a 10 or a 13 pointer because the stickers could easily hold a ring, not sure if 1" though, have to wait to get it back from the taxidermist to know for sure.

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

thats an 8pt in PA...gotta be an inch long for our antler restrictions...."hey deer...quit running..i need to measure your points!"

but in my book thats a 9pt...thats a visible point. but for official scoring and some states it gotta be an inch.

JimPic 12-06-2006 06:32 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

Nice buck...and it is an 8pt.Not that it takes ne thing away from it.A legal point is 1" from the tip of the point to the base where it meets the main beam--that one looks a little short.I'd have taken him in a heartbeat though---congrats!

i agree with you. i got my 6 point bow buck last year but it had a small 1/2 inch POINT comming out of its base. it would have only been a small 5 pnt by PA's standards, but i honestly dont care what they say it is. its a 6 point for two reasons: you can hang a ring on it, and its pointy. 6 points.

so yes your buck is a 9 point. legally, by ur states standards, it may only be an 8, but it IS a 9.

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

thats a 9! anyone that tells you otherwise needs to relax. its not a legal issue as the buck is already clearly a legal buck.

the technical definition may say 1", but who cares? its 9

fishingbss45 12-06-2006 07:12 PM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

I'd say 9, nice buck

Nice 8 point buck!

In order for a point to be legal it must me at least 1 inch long.

Rusty_S 12-07-2006 07:26 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

An 8 point if you want it scored. 9 point if you wann be a penis about it.

Rusty_S 12-07-2006 07:28 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

you really do have to see it in person though. nice thickness to the rack and sit pretty high. Really nice f in buck.

Inch long measured in the above manned. Depending on how you draw the lines I bet you could get it to be an inch.

trophyhuntr 12-07-2006 07:35 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

8pt

Rusty_S 12-07-2006 07:35 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

it definetly would be close. You might have to try that out tonight Cervid.

Sureisaniceskimask 12-07-2006 09:52 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

I say it's a 9 point, it might even be an inch anyway, measure that when you get home....

Rusty_S 12-07-2006 09:56 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

Where do you start the measure from. From tip to ???

Sureisaniceskimask 12-07-2006 10:00 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

That guy put a little picture showing you dude. Tip to shaft, you should know all about that... :D

Tis funny. It's a 9er dude....

Rusty_S 12-07-2006 10:10 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

well if its tip to shaft its totally an 8. HAHAHA!!!!

Sureisaniceskimask 12-07-2006 10:12 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

At least we'll be able to rag him about his 8 pointer, even though I think it's a nine. Shouldn't have shot that one dude, now the debate will never end. Is it 8 or 9? No way to tell.

BarnesX.308 12-07-2006 10:16 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

I'll call the lower point the main beam and give you a longer G4
If it's the other way around, then you have a drop tine buck. I would tell people this:

"I got a 9-pointer. It's a main-frame 8 with a drop tine on one side"

Rusty_S 12-07-2006 10:19 AM

RE: Settle this conflict...someone

its definetly not a drop tine.

Rusty_S 12-07-2006 10:20 AM

Mainframe 8
