I know what you mean , getting old , lazy and outta shape is a real pain in the *** and it gets to be real work out bringing your torphy home.
I started using my Magnum Game Carrier from Cabela's , it has a 300 lb. capacity and 16 inch puncture proof solid tires. I use it to carry my treestands and climbing sticks in to set them up inSept. and to haul them out in Jan. oh yea it really makes it easyer to haul your deer out too. :D |

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
Don't know if it snows where you're at.......but Cabela's also has a heavy duty plastic sleigh in a couple sizes. Get the big one if your deer are large.
It's pretty slick, lay the deer on the mat and lace rope through the eyelets along the edges. Tighten it up (looks like a suasage)........pulls real slick!! The wheel carts don't always work too well if there's snow on the ground. Or as my dad would say, "That's why I 'had' you boys!" |
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
an inexpensive plastic sled is a great tool... lightweight and easy to pull, especially on snow.... put a couple of bungie cords on one side and holes on the other and you can criss cross to strap the deer down... rope out front and away you go.... use them to haul goose decoys and lately for getting deer out of the woods... talking the long tub like plastic molded ones...
tried a deer cart for a season or two but by the time you drag the thing a mile and a half into the woods, load a deer up and get it back out it is a real PITA especially in hilly or mountainous terrain... |
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
I got one of the deer carts this year for under $100 and it was money well spent. I got my deer out by myself and it was MUCH easier than dragging. I would highly recommend one to lighten your load. The only difficulty that I had was getting the deer on to the cart and tying him down. The cart is also help getting the deer into the back of the truck as you can use it to lever the deer by placing one end on the tailgate and lifting sort of like a wheel barrow. Good Luck.

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
I'm still sore as heck from dragging mine out Saturday morning. I had to carry him across a creek, then drag him 200 yards uphill in 6 inches of snow. Not the worst extraction ever, but it was enough to do me in, lol. My problem is I really have no option other than dragging. The terrain is such that I can't get an ATV back in there, or even a cart. I just chalk it up as part of the deal I guess...

ORIGINAL: wryfly Or as my dad would say, "That's why I 'had' you boys!" it wore him out a few times I say go with the cart thing from Cabela's the plastic one wont really help if you have to go up hill. Or you can do what I do and use a two wheel hand cart. |
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
First i try to get my old Toyota 4X4 pickup closeto it so it can be winched out. If i cannot get my truck close to it, i just go out to the closest road and look old and pitiful.A couple of young, stronghunters will stop and help me get it out. I did that for old folks when i was young. Time for payback.

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
i believe the tree lounge stand would be just right for you. stand and cart, good luck

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
If legal...Pack him out...You can get a rachet pulley from Lowes hardward and winch him up a tree limb...Bone out the meat and put in plastic bags and strap these to your treestand or a back pack and come out with the meat...I have even tagged deer on public land, called them in with my cell phone, written down the verification number of the kill and just came out with the meat....A deer can even be skinned on the ground, seperate the hams from the pelvic with a knife and bone out the rest...
I don't hunt much public land anymore, so I just use the Rancher...:D |

What do you mean you were all in and now have cold over it? makes no sense!

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
If you could somehow make a set of wheels to attach to one of the ladder sections, you could make a cart out of the actual ladder stand. You have all next summer to divise something.

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
How about hiring someone else to drag it out of the woods for you? Offer a couple of young dudes $20 each to get it out to your truck for you and you are home free. You might even finesse things a bit and instead offer them a case of beer, provided they are of age, to drag the deer out. Funny how a case of beer seems to be more highly valued by some than the equivalent $$$ needed to buy the case of beer.

i went to a tent sales where they have tools..i got a dolly that was 19 dollars, kind you use to move frigerator etc..
they have those inflated rubber tires..i took them off and neighbor had old kids bike with 18 inch tires..he gave them to me.. i pulled the dolly wheels off and fitted the bike wheels on.. i sweat mother for only 19 dollars..i am figuring to use 3 rachet straps to haul my ladder stand in and then haul buck out with dolly with 3 rachet straps to hold buck on.. only problems i see is, will deer lay on dolly ok, i think so.. wheels are spoked and i am concerned about laural getting caught in the spokes.. anyone have idea how to make spoke wheels so limbs do not get in them? |
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
take a piece of cardboard and cut it into a circle the size of the inner rim with a hole in the middle the size of the middle. then cut a straight line to the middle from the outside.
somewhat like this ![]() (made that on paint really fast and sloppy) then just slide it into the middle of the spokes. it is found almost always on bikes at walmart. and we used to do this for mountain bikes and it worked great. |
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
try quartering it and putting the meat in a garbage bag. i mean who really eats the ribs, spine, head, lower legs with hooves. i really don't even see the point in eating the flanks to be honest. by the time i'm done they are like paper thin and not even worth grinding due to all the facia and fat around it. but thats just my opinion.

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
On private land I usea 4wheeler. But if I am on land where I can't use a ATV I use my deer cart. They help out alot. One of the hardest things is getting it onto the cart and strapped on.
I also use a ladder stand. One way that I have found that is easier to get them into and out of the woods(If I can't use an ATV) is strap the seat end of your stand to the deer cart. Then all you have to do is pull it through the woods. It is tough but alot easier than dragging it. |

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
Plastic toboggan, they slide over everything but bare dirt easily.
Ive had too resort too cutting a couple deer in half. Gut, then cut in half right behind the rib cage,, you lose a little bit of loin meat but its alot easier making 2 trips with 1 deer. |
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
Hey Kong, get yourself one of these deer sleighs from Cabelas. The large size is like $25 dollars. It makes a deer slide like skates on ice. Don't bother with the bag. First thing I did was replace the ropes with something a little better. The dirctions tell you to lay him on his back. I've found he won't stay that way. Just go ahead and lay him on his side and tie his legs inside the load. I mean, you walk along like he's not therre compared to dragging. Down hill it'll run you down. I use it when I go to NY where we hump back in a long ways. I can tie it right on my back. I also added a couple old necks off old grunt tubes for handles. I have an old safety strap through it too that I can just sling over my shoulder like a back quiver. It is slick. I roll it up tight and stick it so it won't rub or unwind with a piece of duct tape. When we're going to be back in there for 2 or 3 days I just leave it until the last day. I'm on my 3rd one. They don't last forever, but they're worth the few bucks when you have to drag a deer 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. They'll split eventually but still work. I just use it for tough drags, not for places I can get within 200 or 300 yards.

I just drag the deer, and sometimes, it is a nuisance.

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
I had to drag this 190lb buck by myself through rough hilly NE Georgia foothills. I dragged him about 3/4 mile and called my Bro in law. He helped me get it onto the cart...which was about 1 mile up a hilly meadow. I was so exhausted I could barely take the picture, but worth every minute. I would do it again anyday! This was my first deer...and experience with removal.

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
the cart i built is 20" wide pretty strong too. i think 12" wide might be pushing it.

RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
i use a atv or use multiple hunters and switch off
|
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
i just got back from friend who made a DEER CART out of a old wheelchair ..he used the wheels and bottom frame..he found the wheelchair at public dump..
he then took 3/4 inch conduit and made a frame for it..he has about 20 dollars into it..he used lawn chair strapping at wal-mart to hold deer between it..i think it was 24 inchs wide..real nice and light as feather.. this ios better than using bicycle tires and parts you would have to buy..wheelchair comes with everything.. the one he had ,it had wheels about 28 inchs with slotted spokes and made of plastic.. |
RE: GETTING YOUR DEER OUT OF WOODS
You really need several ways to get your deer out. The cart does not work well in thick vegetation. A sled would be better for that situation. I will say the cart is slightly harder than just walking when retrieving game.
My cart is barely showing on the bottom left of the picture. MV out! ![]() |
