270 mag shells are expensive and sometimes difficult to get. Plain old 270 would work well for deer and almost everything else.

My husband has been thru about every rifle caliber and brand known to man. After 12 years of swapping, trading, reloading, and building his own....He has 2 rifles he has kept and refuses to ever part with, the Vanguard in the 270, and a 7mm ruger. Both accurate, kick is minimal, and has enough power for most average deer shots.

I would avoid the weatherby cartridges altogether unless you are a handloader,as the cost of factory loads is very high.Even then,I would want a 26" barrel for either of them. The vanguard comes with a 24" barrel.

Like stubble said, you'd be better off with a Winchester Magnum, as they can reach velocity in a 24" barrel.

If a handloader then .257wby would be my choice. If not I agree with the other skip the wby carts, look at the 2506 or 270 win instead. I have owned both and wish I would have found a LH 2506 instead of the 270 win I bought, though both are excellent cartridges. For deer the .257 cal is a perfect match and will do anything the .277 will do for this application, plus is an excellent varmitchoice as well.

As far as the vanguard it is a solid choice. The savages AT is a "love em or hate em" affair. I am in the later of this affair, I have an AT that I will be dumping this off season because I hate the feel/lawyer bar the AT uses. All my other rifles had trigger work done to get a light/crisp/clean break so I see the AT as a solution to a problem I never had!

I really believe that you would LOVE that gun in .270 WMag, but as said the shells 10 years ago was $2.05 every time I pulled the trigger on my .270WMag

The gun is a good choice, but I'm not a fan of either of the Weatherby cartridges. They are a lot more expensive if you have to buy factory ammunition, gains in velocity are modest at best, and at the expense of more powder and more recoil. Like someone mentioned earlier, they come with a 24". To realize the increase in performance, you'd need at least a 26" barrel. Even then, onlya chronograph will notice the difference.
