Grunting

I was wondering how often I should grunt? Can you over grunt?

Yea you can over grunt , when it comes to grunting in the late season I would trythree short buck grunts like ( urrp ... urrp ... urrp) then wait for thrityor forty minutes if you don't see or hear anything then do it again.
You might want to try a buckroar or growl if you see on just outta range but only do it once to get his attention , if he seems be walking away then do it again.
Good luck , I hope this advice helps and be safe outthere.

RE: Grunting

I hate grunting, usually a result of too much cheese or just meat in my diet. Happens every year when arriving at elk camp, like a bear's plug you find in the spring. Wait that isn't what your asking...scratch that sorry!

As a rule I don't blind call for deer unless rattling. I call inbetween the 15-20 min intervals between the rattling sequences.Waiting for long periods can also be a mistake as the deermight hear the offering but lose the pinpoint, I'd say try grunting/calling every 15-20 minutestoprevent this happening. Just don't stack call and you should be fine.

Good luck

RE: Grunting

This past year in Maine I chased a buck into some thick green growth. When I was in the thick of it, this buck started grunting continuosly, every few seconds. I grabbed my tube and started grunting back. This enabled me to pinpoint his location and plan my approach. We were only 30-40yds apart but way too thick to see anything. Decided to sprint down the deer path when I heard walking. As I busted through some pine there he was trailing his doe.

Figured he was "tending grunting", but I figured my grunting back kept that doe there just long enough for me to find em.

I've never just cold called, but was worried that I might tip em off with grunt after grunt......though it seemed to work.

Guess there's no one way to do it.......just play the cards that are delt to ya.

.....yes I did get the deer by the way :D

RE: Grunting

I let the deer tell me how much to grunt. If I hear deer grunting around me I'll join in.

If I grunt at a deer and he starts coming in, I'll be quiet. If he stops, I'll grunt again.
