A deers brain.
I remember way back I was watching a documentry on deers. It said a deers memory last only 7 minutes.I have spooked deer only for them to return 10 to 15 minutes later to the same place.Has anyone else ever heard of this or encountered deer behavior like this?

Nope..

RE: A deers brain.
nope but that would be kool.....who knows

RE: A deers brain.
from what i hear and the info i gather, deer are very smart animals. they may return after being spooked because they are naturally curious. but they won't come back unless they feel safe. if they're memmory only last 7 mins then how do they follow the same trails, or the same scrape line from year to year. i think your info is wrong tho i have never studied a the brain of a deer or anything like that

RE: A deers brain.
That is very true.. if their memory is only 7 minutes how do they travel the same deer paths from DAY TO DAY let alone year to year..!!

RE: A deers brain.
and why is it if I hunt a stand more then two days I see nothing?
I've had the same thing when I was putting out corn last year. spooked a small doe, it came back three times. and each time it came back it would sit about 40 yards from the corn I had just put out and do it's little stomping thing. alltho...it could just be really good instinct... |
RE: A deers brain.
This could still be true even if they do stay on the same trail...if they never leave it...how can they forget it?
|
RE: A deers brain.
It only takes me 6 minutes to forget that I spooked him....:D
I have spooked plenty of deer. I suppose if there were two or more deer and they went a couple different ways. They may try to come back and find the deer they were with. But I haven't seen them come back, unless maybe different deer all together. |
RE: A deers brain.
i've heard of hunters being "busted" in their tree and from then on, when the deer came back through they would look up into that specific tree to see if anyone was sitting in it. if this is true, then the "7 minute memory" theory is false.

RE: A deers brain.
Deer are not smart. They have very keen senses, though and are very cautious. They have evolved survival behavior just like other animals.
|
RE: A deers brain.
anybody, or anything, can have keen senses but it takes brains to remember that smelling rubber boots means a hunter and smelling acorns means food. and yes deer do follow the same trails every day, and yes maybe it is scent. but how do deer follow the same scrape or rub lines a year later, surely after all the snow a rain from a whole year the scent would be gone. and anyway this isn't about HOW smart the deer are, its about HOW LONG their memmory lasts. the same thing was said about goldfish having a 3 second memmory and the mythbusters on discovery channel tested it and found there memmory to be very good

Seems unlikely. What about those people who have deer cometo their backyard and get used to certain people but not others. I can't remember who it was that had a picture of themselves sitting at a feeder with a couple deer and was saying that the deer wouldn't stick around for anyone else.

RE: A deers brain.
yes dogs can sense danger, but they also know who is there master. when i go away and have a friend watch the dog, they won't eat. they know it not me. now they don't sense fear or danger they just know its not me and they get depressed a lot of dogs to that. i don't get how you can say deer don't have memmories, i'm not going back over every point i've already made but look, if deer had no memmory then they would not be able to comprehend their senses, they would not know what they are smelling, seeing, or hearing. noone has proved yet that deer have only a 7 second memmory

RE: A deers brain.
It's pretty silly to think that deer, or I think any mammal for that matter, has only a 7 minute memory. These animals learn and can remember. Do you think a 5 1/2 yr old buck only has a 7 minute memory?
