Finding stuff in deer
My first we figured out was hit by a car because it had a horn broken of at what looked like a fork on one side and was still in velvet on the other side with a little fork like nubs.velvet isn't common where i was hunting with a rifle near the end of august.
My second deer that a killed up at lake sonoma had a broadhead in it and the shaft of the arrow was gone and it was incased in fat or something for a while. and we found all the parts of the broad with it. I think it might be a curse for me. shooting deer that have an injury of some sort |
RE: Finding stuff in deer
It's amazing, the things you find in deer. Icaped out a big buck last night and noticed his lower lip was cut and completely healed over. He must have been a fighter. The same deer also had a weird bone growth, almost like a nub on a button buck, below his left antler. I will have to post pics.

Where've you been, Piebald? We missed you.(I guess;))

RE: Finding stuff in deer
Between school, hunting, and taxidermy I've been really busy...
|
RE: Finding stuff in deer
Better busy than lazy,IMO.
This summer, I was so bored, because it was too hot outside to do anything, and I would be stuck inside the house watching the History channel , so I thought, "I wish I was back in school, it would give me something to do,at least.". Good luck with the school and taxidermy. |
RE: Finding stuff in deer
couple years ago, we skinned out a nice tall 7 point and found a huge white puss filled growth inside the ribs. when we cut it open, there was a .22 in there. the buck had no visible damage or limp when he was shot.
amazing how deer can keep living. i have also seen two spinal vertebrae fused together where a broadhead had been lodged. that was cool. and at a hunting show i was at, one of the outfitters had a hunt on film of someone shooting a bear with an arrow that went through its one eye and came out in its mouths roof. the skull had already healed around it. weird. |
RE: Finding stuff in deer
I once found bird shot froma shotgun in a deer i shot, the bird shot didn't even go through the hid.

RE: Finding stuff in deer
We found a green arrow vane in the neck meat of a doe. No other sign of injury though.

RE: Finding stuff in deer
A buck my uncle shot had an arrow shaftin the rib cage, all inside, just broken off on each side, real old wound, couldn't even see any marks on the outside where it went in. It was a really wierd feeling when we reached in to gut it and there was a bar across the cavity.A buck my friend shot had a broadhead stuck in its tear duct, eye seemed fine too. Another one of my buddys had a deer with part of an arrow shaft stuck in its head, right in front of the eyes. On the farm next to where I hunt, the guys that hunt there must not practice much, there were 3 deer last year with arrows sticking out of them, one had an arrow stuck in its head, walking around with bright orange vanes between its rack not cool.

The buck i got this past monday when i walked up to it to gut it had its penis and balls ripped into. The balls were nearly ripped off, and the penis was sticking out of a hole that was ripped by im guessing another bucks horn. The penis was basically skinned and all u could see was the inside of the penis(the part thats usually covered by fur) and about an inch above that was the fur part of the penis with no penis in it. The part that was skinned looked almost rotted and infected. We gutted the deer and sent it to the butcher.. D oy uthink the meet is still good?

RE: Finding stuff in deer
I don't know if this is true but my dad told me the other day that my uncle shot a deer several years ago that had a slug stuck in its skull??? Don't know?

RE: Finding stuff in deer
The second doe I shot w/ a bow this year had either been shot before or hit by a car. As I was skinning her, just below her left, front knee, there appeared to be a second knee. It really looked like she had a second knee joint below the normal one, turned 90 degrees out. Actually, it was where her leg had been broken. The break was at least two years old. Very well healed, no signs of infection or problems. She walked normally before the shot and ran like a scalded dog after, for about 50 yards anyway.
The wildest thing I have found came about two years ago. Between my kills and the deer I clean for others, I average around 10 to 12 a year. I had never seen this before. Anyway, I had shot this very mature doe, probably 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 years old that I had shot with a muzzle loader while she was quartering away. The shot clipped one of her rhumen and whenI was getting the loins, I heard a loud KER-PLUNK in the gut bucket (we do not field dress the deer here as we are rarely more than about 30 mins from our skinning shack and do not want to encourage the yotes and buzzards). Anyway, I got curious and reached into the blood and yuk and pulled out what I thought was a rock. I washed it off and it appeared to be a very smooth stone, about 4 inches long, 2 inches wide and an inch thick. Very smooth, palewhite surface. I did some research and found that it is called a bezoar stone (spelling?). Apparently this is the result of a deer eating someting like a rock or a nail while grazing and it gets into one of the stomachs and can't move on, so to speak. Well, kind of like an oyster, the deers internal organs start coating it with a calcium/bone mix to keep it from being an irritation to the stomach lining. Apparently they are pretty rare (How often do you go digging through the stomach contents of your deer!) to find anyway and are considered good luck. I keep it in my office in a glass cabinet w/ some other items. Hank |

RE: Finding stuff in deer
I shot an antelope this fall that had been shot at least 2 other times before I came along. The shots weren't this years wounds, they were from last year or even longer. The first wound appeared to be a broadhead wound through the neck, that was healed up nicely. The second wound appeared to be a rifle shot in almost the same spot thru the neck. The poor critter had come close to being harvested a few times in his life!
When I was little my dad shot a buck that had a thunderhead 125gr broadhead in the brisket. No arrow shaft or anything. Really makes ya think twice before reaching in an grabbing stuff! |
RE: Finding stuff in deer
i killed a buck one time that had the black leech looking thing all over inside him.........like maybe 20 total. I was scared to eat the meat.

I would have to say you did that deer a huge favor, and if he could, he would shake your hand!

RE: Finding stuff in deer
I found a Satelite broadhead in the head of a buck my uncle killed. It was buried under the skin right at the base of the anter with no sign of skull damage.
A muzzleloader slug in the shoulder a doe. There was a terrible infection and limp and the deer was taken because the assumption she would die. Buckshot pellets in numerous deer rumps. |
RE: Finding stuff in deer
my girlfriends brother shot a small buck last year and we found a slug just under it's hide on the one back leg. pretty wild don't know how long it was there. must of been a long shot |
RE: Finding stuff in deer
I processed deer with my grandfather he had a butcher shop here in wny. We found all kinds of goodies from slugs to broadheads to arrows parts of a barbed wire fence in one. Probably the best was about 7 inches of antler in ones neck just ran right to one side of the windpipe. Also found some people didn't know jack about field dressing some still had lungs and heart in. Some would literally come in with more mud in chest cavity just gross, leaves, why would any body want to eat that gives me thewillies!

RE: Finding stuff in deer
As I was processing one of my deer, I found a broadhead in one. It was a different type from what I shoot - and my shot was a pass-thru ;) It had a thick layer of gristle around it and was completely healed over.
The nicest buck I ever shot had a lot of buckshot in his neck -- and buckshot isn't permitted for hunting in MD! |

RE: Finding stuff in deer
The buck I shot last rifle season had a broadhead in it back, didn't realize it until I was skinning it.
