Small Range Rifle????

What I'm looking for may not exist but I have to ask.I see soo many different calipers of guns but I'm not sure exactly what half of them mean.I'm looking for a rifle thats good up to 100 yards or so but not too much more powerful than that. The land owner does'nt want me to use any long range high powered rifles.I've been using a Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel and a Busnell Trophy Series scope.I'm happy with it but the Sabot slugs are so high it's killing me.The cheapest I've found in my areaare $12.99 for a box of 5.It sucks sighting in the scope.Just wondering if their is any other options?
Is their anything that has a shorter range than a 30-30?
Thanks in advance.
James

I might suggest something like a 44 magnum rifle, but for what you are talking about, I would think a slug gun would be perfect for your situation. You can buy alot of slugs for the price of a new gun, then you have to buy ammo for a new gun too.

RE: Small Range Rifle????

I'm hunting whitetails.I could buy a lot of slugs forthe price of a new gun but long term I'd be better off buying another gun if theirs another option.Spending nearly $30.00 for 10 bullets is gettinghard to swallow.I'll look into the 44 mag and see what it's all about.
Thanks,
JE

I think (not sure) that Marlin makes the samerifle they use for the 30-30 in either a 44 Mag or 357 mag.
These might fit your bill

You may have ascope problem. I would try a different/better scope and or mountsand you won't need to re-sight it in every year, just some practice. I paid $39.80 for a box of 20 .243 cartridges about a week ago. You won't save anything by going to a rifle.

WOW! That's High!!!. I paid $12.00 US for a box of 20 in243

357 or 44mag would be good choices. Your slug gun would be great too, but I understand the cost of shells. You could also consider a muzzleloader. A relatively inexpensive ML, like a traditions pursuit would be good out to 100 yards, but would limit you to one shot. Something to consider though.

id go with a marlin model 1894 in .44 mag.i own one and the yare super accurate.i love shooting it..it has hardly no recoil at all..i would feel very comfortable taking a deer at 100 yards with it but no farther..Last year i took a 4pt with it at 60 and droped him dead in his tracks.

Not all ammo is created equal.

I had a problem with the scope but I think some steel rings and mounts fixed that. That has'nt been my concern, being able to afford shooting itwhenever I just wanted to check the scope is mostly my problem.I want to find a gun that has a bigger variety of bullets for sale.My 270 I can buy a box for $10.00 or up to $30.00 or more.I also like knowing I can afford to be sure my scope is on.I'm really looking into the 44 Mag. rifle. What could I expect to pay for one, just a guesstimate?
Thanks again,
JE

I just looked on Gunbroker.com at the Marlin 1894, and there is quite a range in prices from $325 for a used blue model to over $600 for a stainless new gun. I would do a more specific search on the online auctions, but I would shop around locally too.

RE: Small Range Rifle????

You could get an SKS, it shoots 7.62x39 ammo, and the ammo is pretty cheap, so is the gun, it's mostly a 100 yard rifle.

Get a little H&R Handi Rifle in 45-70 or .450 Marlin.

No doubt retreiverman. I agree totally. But I'm assuming deer under 100 yards in Alabama.
Not sure there is much of a need for premium ammo in this case

I hunt a few urban areas and dont want to shoot " high powered riles" either. Here in Texas any centerfire is legal. I use a .22 Hornet or my bow for these areas. With the hornet I keep my shots to within 75 yds, I put it dead center of the neck and they drop like flies, hogs I shoot them in the head. The hornet will push a 45gr bullet right at 2900 fps. I shoot Hollow points. 25 bucks will get yo 50 rounds

Just a little word here, but theres no gun thats a 100yd gun, I know your saying that thats as far a shot you need, but your land owner needs to realize there not hardly a rifle that shoots a bullet that wont travel atleast a mile.

This is a true statement. There is no true 100 yards gun, but you would have to MAJORLY "lob" a 44 magnum to get a 240 gr bullet to travel a mile. If you look at a ballistics chart (I usually use Winchester for reference), a 240 gr silvertip 44 magnum with a 100 yards zero has a 305 inch drop at 500 yards and retains only 245 ft/lb energy at that distance. Unless you "lob", a six foot man aiming in a horizontal plane at a deer would be plowing ground with his bullet inside 300 yards. Yes, a 44 magnum is more than a 100 yard gun (theoretically), but it is far from a mile gun.

I understand that the the bullet isnot going to hit the ground right past a 100 yards but I will feel like I have a less of a chance with a smaller caliper.
Going to try and go look at some today.

i would look into a .32 or a .35. i have a 35 pump with open sights and i love it for short range in brush. by buddy has a 32 and he loves it also, not sure what type of gun it is i just know its a lever action.

younggun308 11-30-2006 07:30 AM

RE: Small Range Rifle????

You must mean you're buddy has a 32-20 Win.? It's commonly a levergun, but it's not a popular caliber, and what is this .35? Do you mean a .35 Whelen? I thought that's a longer range caliber.

If you want another rifle, buy another rifle, but it will be hard to find a better caliber than the .270 that you already have. The best "100 yard gun" that you will be able to justify is probably the same slug gun you already have. I guarantee you can buy a lot of shells for the price of a new rifle. The smaller caliber (than a .270) doesn't really make sense (caliber is the approximate diameter of the bullet).

my buddy has a 32 not a 32-20(never heard of that caliber untill today). and mine is a 35 rem gamemaster. not the 35 whelen. as far as long shooting, not to sure i never use it for that. i use it, along with my 30-30, for my brush guns.

I would guess a 32 special. I believe it is a Winchester caliber. I have heard about it on a Marlin forum. Ballistically, it is alot like a 30-30.

Man, you need to turn those caps lock off! All capitalised letters is the eqivalent of yelling on the computer, it could scare some people (like me:D).

First off I would keep your 270. It is a great caliber rifle and will do almost anything you want it to.
Secondly, I would have a nice sit down with the landowner and convey to him how confident, carefull, responsible, and ethicalyou are as a hunter, never taking skyline shots, never shoot in the direction of a building or if he has cows always ask where they are and be aware of their presence, and so forth. I am sure he will respond positively.
Good luck.

Of course he won't! The landowner is a Nazi for crying out loud!!!!!!!

"Der Sauerkrauten kartoff ist ein der Reich! Heindeho!.........Was ist das ein der hofteinichtenstern von grundenvar!!! Deir Shwarzwald ein der Reich ist der golpdein shpat ein Ewropa!

That's what the landowner is going to say.

Do you hunt from an elevated position (elevated blind, tree stand, etc.)? If a stray bullet is the concern, shooting from an elevated position will eliminate the problem almost immediately. Spend $300 on a decent climbing or platformstand that youcould use anywhere and be done withrather thananother gun you have to feed ammo:

I use a .270 and a 12 ga. shotgun for the different areas I hunt and I'm always elevated, so I have a good vantage point, no stray misses, and stray shots from other hunters should be below me (if they are shooting down or on a horizontal). I think elevation is your answer. Even a muzzleloader is accurate out to 200 yds. so it is dangerous far beyond that.

The blind looks really cool, and only $320.00! That's a bargain,IMO.

store bough stands are nice and last a very long time, but i mainly make ladder stands out of 2x4's and some plywood. or i hang some steps in a tree and build a little platform big enough for me to sit on. either way all ideas are good and shooting from an elevated position does eliminate some of the problems with stray bullets

if u want a deer gun that dosent go any farther than 100 yards get a 22 22 mag 17hmr those will work but proble not legal all legal calibers will go more than 100 yards sound like to me u need a 22 mag with a good scope and put right between there eyes

younggun308 12-01-2006 05:46 AM

RE: Small Range Rifle????

I think that .22 Mag. isn't legal anywhere in the U.S., because it's a rimfire. Usually, only centerfire rounds are allowed.

This one of the silliest posts that I have read in a while. First of all, it is illegal, but 22 and 17 calibers are probably more dangerous than most due to the riccochet factor.

If I were a land owner granting permission to others to hunt my land, permanent standsnailed to trees that would be rotten in a few years (and my problem to remove)would be theLAST thing I would allow. A climbing stand or the free standing blind I posted have very little to zero impact to the land. Plus if you have to move or the land you hunt is sold to someone who won't allow you to hunt, the time and money you spent on building a permanent wooden stand isn't wasted. You just take these mobile stands with you. You could also do a ladder stand that straps around a tree at the top. I have the previous versionof theclimbing stand posted above and I love it! It's light, the seat warmand if we see/hear deer moving on one side of the property vs. another, you aren't limited to where you have pre-existing stands. I almost always have luck finding a treewith no branches to climb. That platform blind would be good if you are hunting a field or thetrees are too small.

i have many stands i hunt on a few different properties, some are bought and some are built. either way i feel more safe in the stands that i built than in a store bought one. the bought ones are great and i love the few i have, and my wooden ladder stands and makeshift stands i assure you are just as safe. but either way i always use my harness, as should everyone. any tree stand can fail, and any tree can break
