what is considered a point?

Hi all, new here. What do you all consider a point?
Ive always thought it had to be 1 inch long to be a point,
but I just killed a nice buck sunday and I think its a 10
pointer, but several people are telling me its 13 because
you can hang a ring on 13 points.
Thanx in advance.
P.S.
It is my biggest deer to date, so I am still VERY excited!!

EACH STATE IS DIFFERENT, THE OLD WISE TALE WAS "IF YOU CAN HANG A RING ON IT, ITS A POINT" MY HOME STATE OF NJ CONSIDERS A POINT TO BE AT LEAST 1 INCH, SAME FOR THE STATE OF NY.

I think that, technically, to be a point, the tine must be as long as the diameter of the beam it's coming off from. Say the main beam is an inch and a half thick where the tine starts-the tine must be at least an inch and a half long. If not, it's a sticker. Might be a little different with brow tines. See PA antler restrictions.

Here in Wisconsin it is a point if it's an inch long.

different parts of the country have different ideas. like out west 4 on each side is a 4 pt. some say 4x4. in the south is is an 8 pt.also if it will hold a ring they call it a point. it depends on the person that takes the deer.

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

According to Boone and Crockett, a point must be at least one inch long and its base must not exceed the length. However, different jurisdictions define legal points in different ways; you must be familiar with local game laws to make sure you are complying with point restriction regulations.

For scoring in Pope and Young or Boone and Crockett, the point must be an inch in length from the baseline created by drawing a line on a plane from one side of the point to the other along the beam or point from which it originates, and must be at least as long as the width of that line. Wish I knew how to draw you a picture, kind of hard to describe in words.

I like the ring idea makes my recent 5 point a 7 point. Any way try booneandcrocket.com they explain the 1 inch rule. So where is the picture of the 13 pointer. Striper Phil

Way to go Indiana Dude. Sounds like a dandy deer. Here in Ontario Canada...........it's a 10pt. Points need to be a minimum of 1".
Regardless of points, congrats on the succesful hunt.

Nothin' better than the second week of deer camp.
