I have to decide between 2 different stand location for the opener of the Wisconsin Gun Deer season. See attached rough layout of area.

Stand 1 is in a pine tree on the edge of a beaver pond overlooking about 4 acres of grassy open area that is completely surrounded by a fairly large tag alder swamp. There is no other hunters that will be near me. I have not gun hunted this stand but did bowhunt it twice a 2 weeks ago and did not see anything. I know that the deer get pushed into the tag alders but am not sure if they will come out into the open area.

Stand # 2 is located on the other side of the tag alder swamp about 1/4 mile away and is on a open crp type field that is inbetween two popple slashings that the deer bed in. This stand is easier to get two and I have seen some good bucks from this stand.

The wind normally blows any sent out over the beaver pond.

What do you all think about what stand to sit?

well i think i would pic stand two, your seeing some buck thats a good sign, those deer arent guna realy want to go into the open area when the first day roles around, i dont know what state you are hunting, but i figure that those deer are guna stay more toward the hard woods, and maybe they will come out on the edges of that feild and walk the woods. In Pa buck and doe are hunted for two weeks only people with a doe tag can shoot a doe. If no one else is hunting that area deer might be ok to go out in the open cuz no one is bothering them, till you drop the big one right?<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> but even so stand two has that open field too. Good luck and i hope i helped ya.

Start with what you know and have seen. To forget the spot that has shown you deer would be a mistake in my opinion...so obviously I say stand #2 as well. Now if this stand does not produce you have the luxury of sitting a back up stand, so it is always great to have a back up plan to fall on too. Once the pressure is on, if they do find haven in alder's, then you may just have the spot of a lifetime. But food is always a good place to start and beds are even better. Being you are the one and only that whole area may become a haven, so just watch your wind and have fun!

I would hunt stand #3. I would place it where the Tag Alders and the Hardwoods make the 90% corner at the South end of the field.

I would look at stand #4, just northwest of stand #2 in the northwest corner of the hardwoods. You could hopefully cover a little of the tag alders swamp and a good chunk of the hardwoods. Also, the field and the pond kind of make a funnel there.
