Foster slugs or sabots?

Little Biscuit took me by surprise and he wants to deer hunt. Slugs are the law here. I am familiar with the old style Foster slugs and the damage they do. What is the advantage to getting a rifled barrel and using sabots? As you can see, need to catch up a little. Ranges will not be over 100.

Accuracy is a plus, cost is a negative $9 up to $14 depending on which brand the gun likes. I use a rifled barrel with red dot and shoot sabots. Its nice to know you've got a 3 inch group at a hundred yards. Slugs are accurate to 50 but since they have more mass they do more damage.

If you want to set him up right get the rifled bbl and use sabots. You won't be wondering if you should have gotten something better. Personally, I use a smooth bbl and fosters. I can drop deer at 60 - 70 yards which is far enough for my hunting situation. I get my slugs on sale for $2.75 - 3.00 per box of five. Good luck whichever way you go.

I've got a rifled barrel, so I quess I'm partial to that, but if I had a smooth bore, I would definately try federal's "trueball", they come up with a design that uses a small plastic ball that fits in the hollow on the back side of the fostner round. It stops the slug's skirts from damage during ignition, thus helping the slug travel down the barrel more effectively and that results in better accuracy. Either choice are good. hope this helps, Scott.
