7.62 x 39

It is not a long range cartridge but if you will practice with it and learn how it shoots out to 100 - 150 yards it will kill deer at those ranges. A scope would be a good accessory and put in plenty of time at the range.

I understand it is not a long range round. I am very comfortable shooting this round. I just can’t find soft point ammo locally. I have been feeding the deer for a month under my stand. I just was not sure how well hollow point 7.62 x 39 wound work for hunting. Thanks for the replies.

That round is pretty simular to a 30-30 in ballistics, with the nod going to the 30-30 because of the heavier bullet weights. If you are talking about the cheap military surplus crap with tiny hollow point it will probably kill deer, but will not work as well as some better ammo.
Are you saying that no one in your area sells 7.62x32 ammo from the major makers? Any gun shop should carry something, heck even walmart should carry something other than the cheap stuff. There is some pretty decent ammo out in that caliber if you can find it.
However anything you can get your hands on will kill a deer if you hit in the right spot. And providing it shoots accurate enough to use. You zip one of those babies thru the lungs and that deer will die. It may not drop on the spot, but it will die for sure. Just be sure of what your gun is capable of and only take good shots.

Wolf makes a 154 grain soft point and I think Winchester has a 123 grain softpoint and remington makes a 125 grain. Comparing the remington 125 grain 7.62 to the remington 150 grain 30-30 the 30-30 has more energy out of the muzzle, but at 200 yards the 7.62 takes the lead.
The 7.62 is also a little flatter shooting, but not much.

Quick note, don't use American 7.62x39 in Soviet/combloc rifles! The American primers are way too soft, and you might end up with a slam-fire.
Anyway, yes, you can cleanly kill deer with that cartridge. I'd recommend the SP's over the HP's, but people have used both and come home with a kill. I wouldn't push the range past 100-150 yards, though, depending on how well you can shoot it.

I've taken 2 bucks and a doe with the cartridge. One of the bucks was with the hollow points. None of the bullets were recovered. Shots were at 75, 80, and 90 yards. As long as you keep your shots under or near 100 yards and place them well, the deer will go down. Good luck and be sure to let us know how you make out!
