FINALLY got my first deer (small 3 pointer)
#1

Hey there....I'm back home from the hunting camp, for Thanksgiving. What a great time. God, I love it up there! [8D]Anyway, as you can see by the subject, yes, Ifinally,FINALLY, got my first deer!I didn't get a big buck though. Mine was just a small spike buck with a small "kicker" on one antler, so technically, he is asmall 3 pointer, according to the VA's hunting regs and game check. He probably weighed 110 pounds and wasn't hard at allto drag down off the ridge.See, me and 3 other guys did a "deer drive", with me going straight up the ridgeline while the other guys stayed down along the trails and pastures below the ridge. I hiked up the front of the ridge, and ever-so-slowly walked straight ahead.Up on the ridgetop,I decided to hunker down beside a fallen tree and brush. I heard leaves rustling louder than any squirrel could make, and knew it wasn't the guys on the ridge. I didn't know if it was a huge buck, a doe, a fawn, or what. So, I sat straight ahead, and turned my head to the right, and saw a small buck checking out the thickets for a place to hide. He was probably 75 yards away from me, and he originally looked like a small 4 pointer, but I wasn't sure. So, I carefully turned myself to the right, and used the falled tree trunk as a brace for my arm and rifle. The noise I made, caused the deer to freeze and stare straight at me. Ididn't move a muscle, didn't breathe, didn't look at him, and in all honesty, I figured it was all over, and he'd go tearing off into the woods. But, once he put his head down to sniff the ground, and that's when I aimed the iron sights ofmy Marlin 30-30 at him. I sat therequietlyand once I saw him turn to the side, I aimed at his left shoulder pulled the trigger. He did a quick hop in the air, came down on his now broken left shoulder, and collapsed like a ton of bricks. The little guy had no idea what hit him. Winchester 170gr Silvertip out of an open sighted Marlin 30-30 at 75 yards in heavy brush. Can't get any better than that!A while later, the other guys got there and teased me about the small spike buck, but also congratulated me and made me realize that all my frustration is now over, asthe "monkey isoff my back" after 4 years, and I FINALLY got my first deer, even though it is a small spike buck with a kicker. Also, there are no photos (nobody had a digital camera anyway), and well, as the guys said, it's just a tiny spike buck and nothing to really brag about. It's more considered meat for the freezer than a big trophy deer. But to mewas kind of special, because it's my very first deer.Butch A.

Congratulations on your first kill. It's the one you'll remember the most. Remember that a trophy is in the hunters own eyes and you should be proud of that deer. May you have many more successful stories.
