My Wisconsin Buck

My hunting partners just got finished draging out a doe around 8:30am opening day. They were making all sorts of noise near my stand as they walked by me. Not more than an hour later, this buck came from my right (which was great as I"m left handed), walked thru some pines, and finally came through an opening, just where Iwas aiming, maybe 75 yards away through some hardwoods. A single shot from the 30-06 and he tookoff. Seconds later I heard and saw him crash into some smaller saplings.

My partners, who hadjust settled down from the last deer, were already at the downed buck. I was on the radio asking themabout it. As soon as one of themsaid it was a huge,I think Ijumped down the 30 feet or sofrom my Treelounge andsprinted the remaining distance.

Imagine a 300 lb bear dressed in blaze orange and wool bibs, carrying a rifle and gear bag, sprinting through the woods. That was me. I darn near had a heart attack.

I made a clean shot, through the heart. I think it can be scored as a 14 pointer, but it's going to be close. Unfortunately I didn't get a accurate weight on it, but would guess in the 180 lb. range field dressed. I do know it was a real pain to drag out. Some guy at the resistration station measured the inside spread at 20 5/8", and the longest was 8 1/4". By the looks of it, we are guessing the age to be 3-5 years.

Our group has hunted the same area for more than 25 years, and this is definately the largest buck ever harvested by our group. I'm going to have bragging rights FOREVER!!!

I hope the pic turn out,it wastaken with a throw away camera. Hopefully I post the pic correctly.

He is going on the wall.

Can anyone estimate a score by the photos? I'm not a trophy hunter, but it would be nice to know.

Thanks,

I found some reading material about scoring the buck. Looks like I'll need to get with the taxidermist for additional measurements.

Great buck, tough guessing the score on that angle. You have any other pictures you could post?

Great Buck! If I had to guess I would probably say about 130's to 140's. I'm no expert though. When you find out let us know!

Vern nice buck. It must be the year for the folks that are due for a nice trophy. My hubby got a nice 10 pointer this year too, biggest ever on our land. What area do you hunt??
