RE: What should my hunting buddy do?
I agree with jim on the pro's and con's except on the doe con. It is not a negative not to have any antlers to hang if this is the first deer that you have killed. Get a few under your belt first and then become a trophy hunter. Also, He has never killed therefore i take it that he has never had buck fever. You do not want to get a big buck come out and gut shoot him in all of the excitement. First deer--if it's brown, it's going down.

You know I've boiled the hell out of them and you just can't soften those antlers enough to eat.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: What should my hunting buddy do?
Let him decide what he wants. Like eveyone else said explain the difference about the 2. Tell him its not the kill thats important its the hunt and being in the outdoors with friends. Also make sure he's going to be safe and not shoot at anything that moves. Alot of guys go out and get a little trigger icth especially the 1st time. Good luck and have fun!!!

RE: What should my hunting buddy do?
i remember the first time a family freind asked me to go deer hunting i was 12(no one in my family hnted and i still don't know where i got it from)i said that i wanted a buck even tho i had a deer tag so i went out in the woods and i saw i doe i didn't even remember that i wanted a buck i just raised my gun aimed and shot her right in the spine(bad shot)
point of the story the kid might get excited that he sees a deer like i did and shhot it if it has antlers or not |
RE: What should my hunting buddy do?
I would let him make that choice.. I'm after a big 8 & or the non-typical that I've seen in the area I hunt. I also plan to shoot a doe for meat & to mount, a friend of mine shot a very nice buck & the doe he was with & had them both mounted. You should see them.. They are facing each other with the buck a little bit above the doe, it looks like they are smelling/kissing each other. It's very neat!! Good Luck to you both..

RE: What should my hunting buddy do?
there are a couple of things to consider......
how probable is it to harvest or even see a good buck in your hunting area? and.....is the rut in full swing in your area, winding down, or over? my suggestion to your buddy is if he's seeing deer all day long, go ahead and hold out for a decent buck, and if nothing presents itself the first day then i would take the first deer that i saw the second day. everyone seems to have visions of taking a monster buck their fist time out but truth be told you usually don't have much success until you cut your first hair and that usually doesn't take place your first season. so tell your buddy to get his first couple of misses out of the way this season, and next season when and if a huge buck shows he'll only have to worry about his shorts getting tight...LOL. most of all make sure your buddy has fun and doesn't get disappointed if his tag goes unfilled...theres more to hunting then filling a tag.
