slugs, what do you prefer?

i shoot federal truballs out of my 20 gauge remington 870 and they shoot amazing. i have another question is why does everyone think that you have to use a 12 gauge? i shot a doe with a 50 cal muzzleloader and it did the job, now is it just me or is a 50 cal bullet the same size if not smaller than a 20 gauge slug? just wondering what you guys thought.

I only use a muzzleloader for gun season. CVA apollo 50 cal. and yes the 50 cal. bullets are roughly the same size as a 20 guage, but I shoot a 44 pistol bullet with a plastic sabot. More range and less wear on the barrel.

Irhuntr.....is that in 20 or 12? i just couldnt get the sluggers to shoot well out of my gun, the best ones i was shooting with were the truballs and winchester super x.

I'm with Sphinx, I also use a muzzle loader during gun season, TC omega. Hell of arush when the smoke clears.

i know what you are talking about the rush. i shot a doe on a morning when there was absolutley no air moving and it took a good 30 seconds for the smoke to clear on a doe that i was sure that i missed. when it cleared she was flailing around on the ground and i went insane.(it was my first deer ever) i usually save the ML for places where i need a little more distance on my shots.

I use a 12. I haven't tried the truballs yet but am planning on it. Although the sluggers have work well for me.

Tried the Lightfield 3 1/2" slugs. WOW....they flew great out of a Mossberg 835. I can't imagine how it hits a deer. It might roll it 3 or 4 times over before it comes to a rest plastered against a tree and I am sure I will need a putty knife to scrape it off...:D

I agree. They group well and shoot an extremely flat trajectory. They're pricey. I like buckhammers too. They group good and are a big 601 gr. slug that's gotta pack some serious punch.

I've used the Cor-Lokt's and the Federal Barnes Expanders. This year I'm going with the Hornady SST's, both in my son's 20 and my 12. They are grouping well and I can hit a clay set on the 100yd berm.
My son already took a doe with one during youth season. Small hole in the left shoulder, but took out lung-heart-lung.
