There's a nice article in this months Northa American whitetail that proves spikes have just as much potential as other small bucks. Interesting read none the less.

Where I hunt at I can't due to point restrictions, but even if I could I wouldn't.

any deer at its prime, wether thats 3.5 or 6.5, will be atleast a decent sized buck.

Yep, I'm not a trophy hunter so any deer will do but I haven't shot any spike buckyet only does and a couple of 8 pointers only. There's more hunters then trophy hunters out there that will shoot any spike or deerthat presents a shot. If you let it go it will get shot by someone else anyway. The only way to do this is put a point restiction on bucks.

The vast majority of spikes are just very young deer. If you want to kill a trophy then you have to let the young deer walk.

The second deer I shot last year was a spike , I'm a meat hunter so I'll shoot a decent sized spike without hesitation . If the spike has short enough nubs I can check it as antlerless and preserve my gun tag for a larger buck later .

I've got nothing against shooting spikes, but I'm gonna try not to. I would much rather shoot a nice doe or buck, because everyone around here shoots anything that moves and big bucks are hard to find.

I didn't get to go out this evening since the wife was working, but my dad called me tonight after he got back from the woods, and was telling me about the coolest spike he'd ever seen. He said it had atleast 12 inch spikes. Said it was so unique he considered using his buck tag on it, but then figured there was still too much time left to kill to settle for a spike with his buck tag.
