RE: Taking children to observe deer hunting

I have 2 boys that are 4 and 6. They love to go hunting with dad. I just posted a few pics of the last time I took my oldest bow hunting. They are posted in the hunting buddy thread. I always have great time. In fact tonight I plan to take my 4 year old with me muzzle loader hunting tonight. We are lucky to have 3 very nicely equiped stands with heaters in them. Once the little noses get going it is sniffle city and then I get dirty looks from mom when we get home.

I have been taking my 12 year old daughter deer huntingsince she was 10, and she went duck hunting with me when she even younger than that. She really enjoys deer hunting, but, as with most kids, has a hard time staying still and quiet, and I'm certain we have spooked a few deer. Fortunately, we have been able to hunt mostly in box blinds, which helps some, and I have taken two deer with her in the stand, one of which she helped me track. Seeing and taking the deer is what really hooked her. This year, she is hunting herself with a .243. She really wants to kill a deer and I have no doubt that she can and will do it. She is a good shot and has practiced extensively. She is also getting into duckand dove hunting with a 20 ga. My son, who is 14, has been a few times, but doesn't really care for it much. So, I don't push him.

I take a lot of kids out. Observing, hunting, fishing, and all. www.youthoutside.org
Here is my advice.
Some kids will go and stay all day long. Some want to leave 5 min after getting there. When they want to stay all day, Stay all day. When they want to leave, leave.
Explain as much to them as they want to know. Sometimes I find myself explaining more than they care to hear (at the time). I answer their questions honestly as well.

i remember hunting with my dad when i was 6 years old. i am 20 years old now, and i can still remember that day like it was yesterday.

too many kids these days rather sit in front of the videogame (my roommate just walked in with the Xbox 360 he just bought) instead of going to sit out in the cold. but those are my best memories. i couldnt tell you what cheats you need for some of my older videogames, but i could tell you how many degrees it was when i shot my first deer.

Take your kids hunting. i am glad my dad did.
