My buddies and I have had a great season so far. We're seeing more legal bucks this year than ever before (Arkansas started a "3 point on one side rule" four years ago and it appears to be beginning to pay off). We passed on a couple of others this size (8 point) and several 6 pointers as well. I did not get a chance at the monster yet this year, but I think I saw him moving through a dense thicket late one afternoon. Never offered much chance to identify him, but from what I could see, it was a very big-bodied buck with heavy mass around the bases of his antlers..could not make out the points in all the brush. This fellow is the heaviest deer I've ever taken here in Arkansas...we estimated him at about 180 lbs...we have an awesome mast crop this year and all the deer are fat, which I hope bodes well for next season. I couldnt quite make out all this deer's rack details in the 2 or 3 seconds he offered me a shot in the thicket, but I could see he was big bodied and legal. Wish he'd had more mass, but not bad for the first deer of the season. Freezer's full! I also took him with my brand new .30-.30...I love that little gun. I took him at 35 yards through a pie-plate sized hole in a dense thicket of honeysuckle and cedars at about 5 PM on 11/14. And special thanks to Cardeer...the necklace was on. Hope it brings the monster into range before the season ends ;) Go to this link and then click on the album labled "Deer Season".

270Man...be patient with your 3 point rule in PA...I counted back and I actually think its been 5 years since Arkansas implemented it. We noticed no change in the first 2 or 3 years, except that a lot more does were being taken (increased bag limit on does for the meat hunters) but in about year 3 we started started seeing more small bucks. But this year it really became noticable. We saw a lot more 2 and 3 year old bucks than ever before. No doubt most of these bucks would have been taken prior to the 3 point rule, when they were too inexperienced to avoid hunters. There is also no doubt in my mind that many of these bucks that make it to 3 years of age will gain the smarts they need to make it to 4, 5, 6....I cant wait for the next few seasons to see. And yes, the deer pictured above is already at the taxidermist for a sholder mount...I think he deserves that honor for all the work he put me through getting out of that thicket in the dark!
