Default Deer crap question

When you find deer droppings in a clump, like a horse, does that indicate a buck or is it any old deer who's not eating enough fiber?

Usually it means it's a buck's droppings. I mean sure it could also be a deer that isnt getting enough fiber but I would have to go with it being a bucks droppings. Do you see more piles of droppings that are clumpped like the one you described or do you see both or more single dropping type? If you see more of the clumpped type than MABEY it is that their isnt enough fiber in the area food but if you consistantly see both than I would tend to also think it is a bucks. Good luck and Good Hunting

I don't usually go by the dropping's,Other than the fact big deer big poop,Little deer little poop.I have seen some doe's that have left some good size dropping's
I know this probly doesn't help any,Forbuck travel routes I usually look for rub's or scrapes.
If you have doe's there than buck's will be there sometime.

You can't tell the sex of the deer by looking at its droppings....sorry. This is an old wives tale.

Does, as well as bucks, can leave large solid stools or pelleted stools. It all depends on what they have eaten.

I read an article about this once upon a time but it has been a long time ago and I can't remember where it was from or even if it was a reputable source. Just b/c it was in print doesn't mean it was right either. I think what it said was this.

The number of pellets in the droppings (most of the time) determines if it buck or doe. There are exceptions to the rule the article noted. I'm not sure how they accounted for the various size deer out there or the variety of each species. It would be a nice topic to investigate. I would think that there are too many variables out there. One would have to consider what they are eating to make a fair comparison.

I think the only way to find out the answer to this question would be to have a deer farm where the deer are keep in stalls and each feed a measured amount. Then have a biologist count the pellets each day. My guess would be the bucks do put out more pellets with some of the larger females beating some of the smaller males for pellet count. Sounds like a job for a grad student.

It depends on what the deer are eating as far as how they crap. This time of year bucks have a different diet, lots of protien. This may be were the old wivestail comes in to play. I've always been told the clumps were bucks.
