RE: 400 yard trophy?
Please tell me you're kidding about the maturity remark. Anyway, what is ridiculous about a 1000 yd shot? Given the proper equipment, technique, and practice 1000 yds is very do-able. I'm not there yet, but it's fun to push your limits. As for a sniper wannabe, I don't think so. I spent 6 yrs working for good ol' uncle sam, and that's one job that never really appealed to me. What will you do to expand your horizons once you get to the point that getting to within 20 yds of a whitetail is no longer a challenge?
ORIGINAL: M77man ORIGINAL: kingofspring Brother, I've taken more deer inside of 20 yards with a rifle and bow than most people will ever see in a lifetime. To me, there's more of a challenge in doing something you've never done beforethan the same old thing over and over. I'll continue to bow hunt during archery season, and will also continue to hone my long range ability for a different challenge. To live inside you're own little pebble sized mind with no room for expansion is what is truly ridiculous. ORIGINAL: M77man I would ratherlearn how to stalk and hunt, then fire no more then say 250 yards. I would get way more pleasure learning more about the animal and be able to track it down and get closer in on it then to launch a pebble at 1000 yards, is ridiculous. Anyway, I'llbethe first to admit that I am an in-experienced hunter having hunted from a tower blind with a 300 yard firing lane for the past few years nowusing either a 7mm Rem Mag or a 30-06 and to be honest, a 300 yard shot is rather easy with a 7 Mag. But a 1000 yard shot? C'mon you have to admit that's ridiculous. And it's obvious that we have "sniper" wann-a-be's onhere. All I am saying, is that I personally would rather learn how to stalk and hunt then sit from a tower and shoot at long range. 400 yards is fine. Actually, if it were the trophy of a life time I would take a shot at 500 yards but not much further. Please try to showsome more maturity in your posts in the future also. Be with Jesus bra |
RE: 400 yard trophy?
no problem,,,hell i shoot crows 300+ yds all the time..and a crow is a very small target bud...

RE: 400 yard trophy?
I would not shoot. For one main reason I would not be able to make that shot. I have never even target shot past 250yards!! Hell where I livethree quarters of the rangesdo not have more than 200 yards to shoot!!I hunt in NY, close up east coast hunting. The area I live is shotgun only, my longest shot on a deer is about 90 yards. Out of 33 deer with shotgun only one has been over 60 yards, most between 25 and 50 yards, a couple under 10!! Out of 11 with bow, longest at 33 yards closest at about 3 yards! I have shot one with a rifle up north he was about 40 yards! It is just the type of hunting I do, thick cover. I do not hunt ag fields or power lines. I can and will shoot my bow out to 35 yards, my shotgun to 100 yards, my ml to 100 yards and my rifle to 200 yards. I have a 30 30 for up north and a 7mm mag.
The 7mm I bought when I took a couple trips out to hunt Idaho a couple times. I practiced and felt comfortable out to 200. You can definetly shoot long distanses out west. The weird thing for me is out past 250 or so they are just targets. I need to get closer. That is just me, I have nothing against anyone who can make those shots. Actualy quite the opposite, I am impressed! Guys out here yelling about to risky? Hell I bet if you had any way to get true info the long range shooters probably miss less than your average Joe, I base this just on that in my opinion specialized people tend to practice more. To each their own. |
RE: 400 yard trophy?
For the long shot fans. How much energy does the load that you use retain at 1000 yards?
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
Hornaday 178 gr BTHP .308
Muzzle velocity- 3307fps ft-lb @ 1000 yards- 1042 best of luck |
RE: 400 yard trophy?
i would never do it because it is cheap and stupid. o i shot a deer at 431 yards no one cares i think a better challenge then shooting that far is getting closer because it just seems cheap to me.
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
Seems to be a rather touchy subject... Well, my biggest buck dropped with one shot at 500 yards from my 300win mag. It was a mule deer out on the South Dakota prairie, and there was no way to get closer. The furthest shot I've ever taken on a whitetail was about 350 yards. Not that I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting further, just that it's rare to get a shot like that in whitetail country. Now, all this about 1000 yard shooting? I would do that if I had a tripod mounted MK-19. But there may not be a trophy left after a hit with that.

RE: 400 yard trophy?
ORIGINAL: spudrow Most shots out west for antelope are at least 300 yard shots. If you practice, practice, and practice, know your ammo, your gun, and the surrounding conditions, it isn't that hard to reach out and touch them. If you aren't comfortable with long shots then by all means don't take them. But to say people that do are morons is ridiculous. Good luck to you. Mac |

RE: 400 yard trophy?
I shot a 10 point this year at 403 ranged yards with my Ruger 7MM mag shooting a 140 grin Acuubond and dropped him in his tracks. On my Lease a 200 yard shot is concidered close in. But I do admit I shoot allot and at ranges out to 600 yards and would not recommend shooting these distances unless you really know your rifle and Pracitce allot with it.

but at my current shooting level, i would not take the shot today, i have in the past, may practice enough in the future to be confident with that kind of shot, but not today;) |

RE: 400 yard trophy?
I would take the shoot with my .300 win mag in a second IF the deer is standing broadside with little or no wind. I have taken several deer in the 300-400 yard range and one at 630 yards. If you shoot alot, know your rifle, have a scope with target turrents to adjust for wind and elevation, and a rangefinder it is very do able.Heck you dont really even need target turrents or a rangefinder out to 350-400 yards with a good rifle.Yes I enjoy shooting deer at long range. Thats why I practice on groundhogs all summer long.

RE: 400 yard trophy?
Hunting Is Knowing Your Abilities Ability =Lots of practice not just at the range on perfect benches/distances, but in the woods with your stands or blinds. (they are not perfect benches) The woods also have variables and obstacles: trees, bushes and limbs ect... these are bullet deflectors. Deflected bullets are misses and/or wounded game. When you become aware of all of these....... Then we get to GAME FEVER this causes problems with nerves, rapid heart rate, shaking, and some blindness to range and obstacles such as trees and limbs which takes us back to bullet deflectors.(missed and/or wounded game) The next thing is knowing what type of bullets to use for the game you are hunting. How much penatration, how much expansion, how much penatration before expansion and how fast to expand. (example .224 50 grain sx bullet with muzzle vol.4000fps only penatrates1/2-3/4 inch explodes massive damage for next 3-4 inches with no exit on coyotes/deer)( .224 50 grain sp bullet with muzzle vol.4000fps penatrates 1 inch with max. expansion in 3-4 inches exits with 1- 3 inch blowout) (.284 139 grain sp bullet with muzzle vol.3000fps penatrates 3 - 4 inches before it starts to expand max. expansion in 6 - 8 inches. 3/4 inch exit from12 inches of solid meat) If you think about this a .284 139 grain sp bullet would travel 1/3 of the way through a deer before it starts to expand (note: lung tissue is not solid meat either) A better choice in bullets would be the .284 120 grain sp or hp for the faster expansion it penatrates 1-2 inches, and starts to expand max. expansion in 3-5 inches 3/4-7/8 inch dia. and pushes through about 12 inches of meat (By the way reloads and hornady bullets) sp=spire pt. sx=super explosive hp=hollow pt. BULLET CONSTRUCTION IS IMPORTANT TO CLEAN HUMANE KILLS ALSO!!!!!. When you take practice, game fever, ammo/bullet construction, obstacles, and all variables such as range/wind in to consideration before you pull the trigger then you should have the Ability and Confidence to make clean humane one shot kill on game. PLEASE DON'T EXCEED YOUR ABILITIES AND CONFIDENCE!!!!! MOST WEEKEND WARRIORS DON'T TAKE THESE THINGS INTO CONSIDERATION THEY TAKE GUN OUT OF STORAGE A WEEK BEFORE SEASON, FIRE A FEW ROUNDS JUST TO CHECK SCOPE. GO TO LOCAL GAS STATION, HARDWARE STORE, WAL-MART BUY THE CHEAPEST AMMO THEY CAN FIND FOR THERE GUN AND JUST GO OUT BLASTING. = (MISSED,WOUNDED AND/OR LOST GAME)!!!! I know this is going to offend some people but things to think about before hunting just my opinion thx |
RE: 400 yard trophy?
Wow. Pretty interesting way to look at it
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
I wouldn't be comfortable making a 400 yard shot.Even300 yards would really be pushing it.
I'm hooked on the .30-06 and don't see much reason to switch toa larger or more powerful cartridge. It does what I want it to do at reasonable ranges, where I can see the deer without optics. |
RE: 400 yard trophy?
I could make a 200 yard shot alright, all the way up to 250, but I dunno about 300, but I know that the .308 drops 54 inches @ 400 yards.

RE: 400 yard trophy?
If I ws going to shoot I would want my .338 win mag!! But alot depends on the conditions if I shootor not.

to me shooting "it's not hunting to me at 100 + yards" a deerat 400 yards has no satifaction as hunting a deer one on one with it under 50 yards....i've never shot any of my 50+ deer over 50 yards and only 3 have been with my open sited marlin .35 336, which i sold and hunt with flintlocks only now,and 6 with my .50flintlock the rest are archery deer....flame me if ya must but i don't have to kill a deer to enjoy being outdoors hunting....to bad the 7 out of10 i've run across don't feel that way.....................bob

RE: 400 yard trophy?
Hello! Everyone
I'm new here to Huntingnet but not to hunting,I'm going on my 37th year and hopefully will have a few more left in me. I live in the Piney Woods of Texas and we have some really big deer here but I wouldn't take a 400 yard shot either, not with any gun I now ownbut I wouldn'thavea problem taking a 200-250yrd shot with my 25-06if it presented itself as I have done it a few timesbefore. The longest shoot I've ever taken was a 230yrd shot in the valleynear Banderes on a SouthTexas hunting tripbut I live in the East Texas and a reallylong shot on our 82 acres is at the most 150 yards. I was just curious about the Quote Below? (next Paragraph) I don't even own a 243 cal. Riflebut since I severely hurt my neck and shoulder 6 yrs ago the Savage 16FXSS in 243cal. will be my next deer Rifle because of it'sminimul recoil and it being very very accurate at long range and enough power to take down any deer around here. Triggerhappy Quoted: I would use any of them except the .243... Why? The 243 has a flatter trajectory and more enrgy then a 308win. out to 500 yards as aA Navel & Military test have proven! The 243 was actually created by necking down a 7.62mm NATO case,a.30cal. or(308). Chuck Hawks: .243 bullets are also winners in terms of ballistic coefficient (BC). Without getting too technical, ballistic coefficient indicates a bullet's ability to overcome air drag. This is important for flat trajectory, and for minimizing wind drift. (The higher the BC, the slower a bullet sheds velocity, and consequently the less it drifts in the wind.) Ballistic coefficient is influenced by many factors, and changes with velocity, so all BC figures should be taken as approximate. Civilian deer, sheep, goat, and antelope hunters know that the .243 Win. is a much better killer on animals in the 100-350 pound class than the .223 Rem. A 95 grain .243 boat tail spitzer bullet at a muzzle velocity of 3,100 fps. retains 1,455 ft. lbs. of energy at 200 yards, 1,225 ft. lbs. at 300 yards, 1,024 ft. lbs. at 400 yards, and 890 ft. lbs. at 500 yards (Winchester figures). The .243 is more lethal at 500 yards than the 5.56mm NATO (.223)or 7.62x39 (308) are at 200 yards! http://www.chuckhawks.com/243_service_rifle.htm |
RE: 400 yard trophy?
That a way to show them

RE: 400 yard trophy?
I would have confidence in either my 7mmWSM or my 25-06

RE: 400 yard trophy?
I don't have any experience shooting at a distance of 400 yards,so no I wouldn't shoot.I would do my darndest though to get within a range I am comfortable and confidant with.
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
Would definetly shoot. Have had one oppurtunity like that in Montana, killed a big 8 point at 456 yards with a 7 mag.
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
I wouldn't be the first buck that I have taken at 400 yards. I have no problem reaching out and touching them at that distance with my 7mm mag.
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
I voted yes. I shot a deer once at almost 400 yards with a 270. I shoot long distances pretty regularly and depending on the wind and shot angle I would shoot.
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
My bow won't shoot that far.:)
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
At 400 yards its not hunting IMO. Thats shooting. You might as well put a super high powered scope on your gun and stay home and shoot out of your windows at the deer on your property a few miles away. Not hunting.
|
RE: 400 yard trophy?
If I could not getcloser then400 ydsto any deer, I think I would quit hunting.
