staring into a deers eyes? why shouldn't you?
 

I heard a lot of guys saying not to look into a deers eyes as it's coming in to you. Why avoid eye contact?

The only thing I wouldn't stare at is the rack, especially if it is big. It will have no effect on the deer, but it will have a potentially big effect on you. It has been known to transform grown men/women into quivering bags of jello.

Looking into a deer's eyes won't hurt anything. Just make sure you don't make sudden movements with your head and body. God bless deer hunting and God bless America.

I look at it this way. When I'm in a treestand and a deer spots me, he doesn't look at my knee or my foot. He looks me in the eyes. I always wear a camo headnet. When that deer looks this ol' boy in the eyes, I close them. If he's still there when I open them, I shoot him. Jim <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Exactly right 2eagles, I am from the old school as they call it, I don't look them in the eyes either. When a man pulls up in a car beside you do you stare him in the eyes? No you don't because it is a threatening look. Men don't look into each others eyes unless they are involved in conversation. When a deer stops and looks up the tree at me I don't blink and I view the deer from the very corner of my eyes. I may be wrong, but I ain't gonna change.

2Eagles has it right. I was on my stand last weekend and a coyote came trotting out of the woods straight toward me. I was in full camo on the ground, motionless, in front of a giant, fallen oak tree. He came from downwind, but seemed to sense something wrong. At fifty feet, he stopped, looked in my direction until our eyes met, then he took off fast in the other direction. I don't think he recognized the threat, until he saw a pair of eyes looking back at him. Even when the rest of your shape blends in with the surroundings, I think a wary animal will recognize your eyes as something to run from.

If you are in camo, and they don't see your eyes, you may have a chance. If they realize they are staring at another animal's eyes, they will leave. That's been my experience. When they come under my tree stand, I squint my eyes thin, and don't move. Deer do look up.
