RE: Successful Youth Hunt - Central Michigan
This is the son of a buddy that pasted away in April of this year. My buddy and I took him out to get his first deer on this youth hunt. The bean field was full of deer Sunday morning. As it got light, I started checking the deer in the binocs. One little buck for sure, and this nice 7 point. They kept feeding to the west away from the blind we were in. Just couldn't get light fast enough! I wanted to film this hunt for him, but when I was finally convinced it was a good buck (big deer) I suggested we take him. I saw something small heading towards the deer from across the bean field (not sure if it was a dog or coyote, but we didn't take any chances). We got our hunter settled in on the buck, made sure all other deer were clear, and gave him the green light. He got nervouse and backed out of the scope with a big sigh! He settled down and made a great shot at about 120 yards. He was using a left-handed Browning A-Bolt .270 with 130grn bullets (not sure which kind). The deer dropped and kicked about twice. He hit the deer broadside right on the point of the shoulder. We found the bullet just inside the opposite hide of the opposite shoulder when we skinned him. This deer was very heavy and probably had a large part in destroying this bean field! The only thing that could have been better is if maybe we would have held off for better light to film it better, but we just couldn't pass up this deer on a two day youth hunt with heavy rains lurking. Needless to say, he was very happy as were we.
