i aint going hunting until its colder.to many copperheads.the other day my mom ran over a copperhead.when will it get cold again?

Hey, CRC. I'm right up the road, in Sulphur Springs. I was wondering the same thing. The deer around here aren't feeding very seriously, but since it's November, we should have a cold snap coming soon. If it even gets down to 50 degrees, you shouldn't worry about snakes much - they slow down and won't usually bite. Does it seem like the rut is still going there?

Oh come on just grab them slivery suckers up and bite their heads off!!

I have seen snakes out in jan and feb in ark before. they are slow and sometimes i stomp them . when i am wearing my good boots of course!

Has anyone here ever been saved by snake boots or chaps? Had a snake actually bite your boots or chaps?
How high do they usually strike? I dont live in snake country , but if I did I'd probably opt for the full body armor!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Generally a copperhead or rattlesnake won't bite more than 6 inches above the ankle. Most often they will do eveything they can to get out of your way. Snakes don't hear or see very well at all but feel vibration from your footsteps and see movement. Unfortunatly, your best chance of being bitten is while you are still hunting or walking very quietly to and from your stand. When you sneak up on one by accident, the snake will bite out of fear.

I prefer snake boots over chaps. If you wear rubber boots the chaps will not protect your toes as the fangs of a fair sized snake will go right through a pair of rubber boots. The only advantage to the chaps would be if you walked by a snake that was sitting on a rock or stump that could put them high enough to bite above the boots.

I've seen snakes year round while hunting in Florida and Georgia. They will get a little slow on cold mornings and seek a sunny spot to warm up in during the day. 16&quot; or 20&quot; high snake boots are good for protection, but also remember loose fitting pants and jackets are also good protectors. Tight pants make for easy pentration of the venom fangs.

In these cooler months, snakes will seek out warmth. Had a nice size cottonmouth curl up around my thermos of coffee several years back -- I don't sit it on the ground anymore, I hang the thermos off the ground. Rattlers also like warm sleeping bags.

And if you think snake are a problem is the fall/winter, wait to spring gobbler season when they are shedding their skins and in that half-blind state strike at anything.

I was hit once with my chaps on by a rattler and had walked past before I realized what had happened.I was wading through briars at the time.Briars are the main reason why I like to where them.
