RE: Man, did I get a bad hit today
About 5yrs ago I shot a nice 10pt during rifle season, before I shot I noticed what I THOUGHT was a small branch hanging in his antlers/over his head, dismissed it and took the shot...when I got to the body, I noticed that the "branch" was actually an arrow that had penetrated to the left of the left eye (between eye and ear) and exited behind the right ear...The wounds around the shaft looked fairly old, I'd guessed at the time maybe a week or two at least, if not longer, based on the extent of healing.
So, some archer had either missed POORLY and made an actually pretty difficult shot, or had made a very poor shot choice. It really amazed me that he was still walking around like normal, considering a fixed blade broadhead went through his brainbox, let alone the fact that the arrow was still stuck in there!!
I mounted the skull with a .30-06 dummy round on the plaque above the head with the arrow stuck back through it...interesting conversation piece.

That's the way it goes sometimes.. Nobody is perfect, but you got him, and that is all that matters. I just hope you didn't ruin the whole hind quater!!!

Last year my dad was aiming up on a nice 8-point. POW! down he goes right in his tracks.Dad walks up and is looking for a bullet hole and cant find it. Then he looks a little closer and he had hit him right in the eye. There was a branch Dad didnt see when he shot. Deflected the bullet.

The only advise I have is to choose your shots a little more wisely. Don't try and make miraculous shots. Keep within your limitations. If the shot isn't there don't force it....ever.
Now on the other hand if anyone hunts lone enough they will make a bad shot due to nerves, equipment problems, unseen obstacles, etc...but you should never make a bad shot on a deer because of a bad angle. If the deer doesn't give you the proper angle then just except it and hope for another chance on another hunt.
Glad things worked out for you.

You hit the femoral artery and bled it out pretty fast.
I had a buck jump the string a couple of years ago and I ended up putting the arrow through its neck. The broadhead severed the carotid artery and jugular vein. It went about 30 yards.
