RE: What type of calls should I use?
Grunt, Bleat or Fawn Bawl depending on what your hunting deer will respond to either of these through out the year not just mating season. If hunting bucks, I would stick with contact or tending grunts & the bleat. The bawl will bring does but bucks generally pay little attention to it.

Try the primos little can, this is my first year using it and it has brought two bucks my way in two days. I have had grunts work in the past as well, I think it is all a matter of luck. If the deer likes what you are telling him, then he will come, but if he doesn't feel like talking that day, they nothing will work.

RE: What type of calls should I use?
The grunt tube is very effective for bucks. It does depend on the time and the situation and the deer. I have in the pre-rut had bucks run from a grunt. Always figured that the big one had whipped them recently. I always do best when I see the deer and can't get a good shot. Always start grunting very softly and see if he responds. If he doesn't then increase the volume until he looks up, then stop. Let him decide if he wants to come and don't over call, he may get scared and leave. Deer are curious let curiosity kill the deer.
I do blind grunt a few times every 15 min or so when I am sure that they are in the rut or heavy in pre-rut. That will sometimes work.
If there is no wind the sound will carry very well. I once grunted in a 10 pt during bow season from 350 yds.
I forgot to add the snort call for mainly does. At times I have seen this pull them in close well, especially if there are 4 or more in the group and they are trying to figure out who is new in the area. I missed with a bow the biggest whitetail buck I have ever seen using this call.
Good luck
