frequency of stand usage?
Just curious how hard you all will hunt a stand location before letting it rest. I'm starting to think that in the past I have overhunted stands, being there for both morning and evening hunts several days in a row

RE: frequency of stand usage?
I try to hunt a stand only 2 times in a row. I will sit in a new stand in the afternoon and then again in the next morning. I alway switch in the afternoon just because it is light out and when climbing into a different stand it is just nice to be able to see if any thing has fallen and in my way to shoot. I never give up on a stand during the season either. If I put it up then there was a reason for it. It just takes that one time to be sitting in the right spot. With that being said I have been guilty of seeing a nice buck in an area and just sticking to one or two stands, usally to never see the buck again and catch him on film by a different stand.

2 days at the most. You dont want the deer to pattern your movements.

RE: frequency of stand usage?
When it's hot, I hunt it! Usually no more than three days straight, then I take a few days off (3-5 days), then I'm back again. This is all provided that the wind is right for the hunt.

RE: frequency of stand usage?
It all depends where it is and how I come and go to it. If I can get out of there without spooking deer that have already passed I will sit in it a couple of days in a row. Then I will give it at least 3 days to cool off before going back. I usually place several stands and play the wind as the deciding factor in which one I go to. If I get busted in any stand I'll let it be for 5 days or more.

RE: frequency of stand usage?
I hunt the same stand as long as deer will pass by it , then I move on if needed . I'm a meat hunter only and I'm still eating last season's deer from my freezer , draw your own conclusion . This technique is not for trophy hunting , mature bucks spook too easily .

RE: frequency of stand usage?
As long as deer are not bustingme and the wind is right, I've hunted a stand as many as 6 days in a row and have been sucessful. 180 incher.

RE: frequency of stand usage?
Depends, I usually only hunt a stand a couple times period. Best sit is the first one, so why not do that every time? I kill all my big stuff on my first post!
|
RE: frequency of stand usage?
depends on a lot of factors. Can I get in and out easy? Am I hunting does or mature bucks? How's the wind holding up? Is it the rut? Am I hunting a travel corridor? I generally don't like to go more than 3-4 days in a row.
Last year I killed all 6 of my deer the 1sttime into eachstand. |
RE: frequency of stand usage?
Maybe once every two weeks unless I have reason to think a good buck is in the area. Always factor in the wind.
|
RE: frequency of stand usage?
I have 2 main deer stands and I hunt them both as much as possible. I don't get to go everyday so when I do get a chance I am in 1 or the other. I usually just pick whichever one I feel like going to and head that way.
ON Saturdays and days my dad take off to hunt we usually use both |
RE: frequency of stand usage?
I always have several stands hung (8 to 10) I will rotate between them to keep them fresh. Some stands will go cold even with seemingly very meticulous attention to scent detail and some area's are more conducive to staying productive.
What typically happens for me is a couple of stands will be much hotter than the others and then I have to use a lot of discipline and common sense to hunt them wisely. |
RE: frequency of stand usage?
depend on stand location, and most important wind direction,woods,2 to 3 break, fields 1 to 2 day break, usually 2 hunts and then change.

RE: frequency of stand usage?
This is definitely one of my faullts when it comes to deer hunting. I seem to overhunt an area. I am a dedicated treestand hunter and will stay in the same tree for days. It seem whatever location I select after scouting, is where I will spend lots of time.
I know the areas well and have seen and shot deer from there year after year. Some areas never have a lot of sign but the deer definitely move thru the area. Most shots are well within 35 yds and some deer can move thru without being detected...(I am sure of that...;)) Also, I can see deer any time during the day and under most weather conditions. Believe it or not, the last few deer I have tagged where mid daywith very high winds. The kind of day you would least expect to see a lot deer activity. Sometimes I get the attitude -The longer I stay the better my odds - I guess it's how comfortable you feel in your area....Whenever I get situated in my stand and get that feeling It just don't feel right....that's when I finally relocate. In the past that logic has served me well, but I also know if mave have been the worse decision I could have made. A friend has suggestd the "three sit rule", where one sit = 1/2 day. Soooo, after a day and a half in the same stand, if there's no activity, it's time to move. Does it work, I'll let ya know....'cause you surely don't want to spend hours (or days) where the deer aren't! |
RE: frequency of stand usage?
Good topic and much like JimmyS I tend to sit in one stand too much. This year I will have 4-5 different stand locations and I will try not to wear out one stand.
|
RE: frequency of stand usage?
Like so many questions that come up on here - it depends. How many deer do you spook getting in? That's really the key question. I have one stand that I could hunt every day of the season IF the wind was right.
|
RE: frequency of stand usage?
I have two treestands and portable ground blind so I never hunt the same two days in a row.
I'll stay in one stand all day then move to the other the next and with my ground blind after that. |
RE: frequency of stand usage?
Unless you are getting busted by deer, why couldn't you hunt a stand for a while. I have had years that I hunted the same stand every day and seen lots of deer every day. The only reason I hunt multiple stands is to see a greater variety of deer and to get some different scenery. It seems that every time I switch stands, I spend a lot of time thinking about what is passing by the other one.
If I spooked deer though, I might give the stand a little time off. But I have spooked a buck and had it come right by again the next day. I think that depends on whether you are hunting the rut or hunting early season. I think they are more likely to avoid an area after being spooked outside of the rut. |
RE: frequency of stand usage?
If I'm seeing deer I hunt the hell out of the stand. Up here if land is not posted you can hunt it. And that means that most private land is up for grabs and its very rare you have a place all to your self. So before some one moves in on me I hunt till the deer don't come by me. Then I'll leave the stand there and hunt from another one. I won't go back for a couple weeks which is usually enough time to cool the area off. (Mostly hunting small wood lots) I have one stand in CT. and thats it I shoot multiple deer there every year. My trick is to find a good funnel deer will leave if pressured but if its a good spot they will be back. Oh by the way I'm a meat hunter too. A nice rack is great but thats just a plus.

RE: frequency of stand usage?
I have three ladder stands on the land that I hunt, plus one climber that lets me be a more moble. I hunt the ladder stands both morning and evening and if I plan on hunting the next day I will hunt that next morning. If nothing produced out of the three hunts, I will move to one of my other stands. Wind direction and feeding times also help me pick which stand to hunt out of for the day.

RE: frequency of stand usage?
like most , just a couple of days at the most....
|
RE: frequency of stand usage?
My Dad and I put a stand on the same tree every year, last year we hunted Saturday and Sunday, morning and evening and then Monday morning he got a 10 point buck 50 yards from the stand.
