1) thinking you NEED to bait
2) not sitting on stand long enough
3) thinking its useless toosit on standbetween 10 am and 3pm
4) too much movement in the stand, it probably takes me a minute or more too look from the left side too the right side.(I usually hear a deer before I see it)
5) NOT SHOWING ANY APPRECIATION TOO THE LANDOWNER WHO ALLOWS YOU TOO HUNT HIS PROPERTY!

Over calling, using too much lure, not being comfortable with your weapon.

Patience, always hunt the wind, don't believe all the scent sprays/elimination etc sales pitches.

Wow.

Great responses. When I started getting out and hunting on my own, I found myself doing about every one of these.

Patience is still a big problem of mine. My uncle, who is a very successful hunter always tells me " you can't kill a deer if you aren't in the stand when he comes by".

I would say another is not to fall for all the gimics of "hunting". Most of the stuff on store shelfs were made for the hunter not the deer. I have a business degree, so I have some experience in the way companies run and produce things to make money.

Just be safe, have fun, and learn.

I definitely agree about the overly high expections brought on by TV and the instant gratification generation coming into hunting age. Not realizing it can be incredibly hard work, through scouting, preparing sites, hiking, hanging treestands, etc. Understanding hunting, especially archery is a lot of failure, but if you wade through it time and again, it is oh so rewarding.

Slow down, have fun. Enjoy where you are at, its a great break from life.
