What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I keep seeing these TV hunting shows and the little bottles that squrit something out to show which way the wind is blowing. What are these things called, where do I get one? I'm trying to figure out the wind before I set up probable stand locations and these things would be a big help.

I have a piece of thread tied on my bow sight and it will show the lightest breeze.

baking soda you can put it in a small bottle and squirt it into the air. it works great

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I think you can find that stuff in most "hunting" stores.
It's just a small plastic bottle with a dropper style head that isfilled with fine, un-scented talcum powder or chalk. That other stuffthat "ducsause" is talking about is extra fine polyester fibers. That's a little harder to find. I've only ever seen it at Cabela's, etc. |
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I use baking soda as well to judge wind direction........
But I alsocarefully watchcloud, and brush and tree movement movement in the distance.......If clouds, grass and branches aren't moving in the direction of wind it is almost certainly prevailing.... |
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I use a disposable cigarette lighter.

You can get them at an outfitter but, another way is to get a small Elmers glue bottle like they use in Kindergaden and fill it with baking soda, flour, powdered chalk, powdered sugar. Basically anything that is a very fine powder. I mainly use chalk and I don't leave home without one. Also another thing you need to think of when setting your stand up is that the way the wind is blowing today is probly going to be different then November. We mostly have wind from the S, SSW, SW, WSW or W during this time of year but come late October, November, and December it is mostly out of the WNW, NW, NNW, and N. It may be different in Virginia though. Good Luck

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Piece of string hanging from a branch will suffice for me.
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Baking soda is as good as any expensive commercial stuff. It also works well as a scent killer for clothing and as deoderant!
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Iusually get an old film vile and keep cotton in it, whenI want to check the wind I pull a lil off and let it float. that baking soda will work too.
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Last season, I bought some of the commercial variety manufactured by Primos...
I was looking for some ideas of what to refill it with (e.g., unscented talc, etc.) I do like the concept of the floating fibers, as they stay visible much longer and allow you to see the wind currents for a much greater distance. |
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
If you are on stand, a little piece of cotton tied with a piece of sewing thread about 4 or 5" long and tied to the rail of the stand oron a branch of the tree in front of you.
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Watch which way my pee blows
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Corn starch for short range , milkweed "floaters" for long range . The corn starch won't spook the deer if they smell it , and the milkweed "floaters" react to the slightest changes in direction like thermals .

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I do what ducsauce does, and just use a piece of bright orange thread. The beauty of this method is that you can constantly check the wind instead of seeing a snapshot of a few seconds. I killed an eight pointer last year a couple of steps before he would have moved directly into the wind current blowing from him to me. I watched the thread and knew that he was about to wind me.

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I'm a big fan of stepping outside and feeling the breeze. It usually tells me from whence it came. After that there is the direction the trees are swaying, the weather vane, dust etc.
A string tied to your bow or near your blind will do. You do not need to buy anything from a "hunting store" to tell you where the wind is coming from. |
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
If for some reason I need to check the wind I use some grass or some needles off a fur tree
Use the old tried and true method.....went your finger and hold it up and you will have a cool feeling on the side of your finger the wind is coming from....an oldie method. my grandfather still goes by that method. |
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
On one of my trips out of the woods after scouting before the upcoming deer season, I like to grab the tops off a couple milk weed plants that are busted open ( or about to bust open ) and I put them in a dry paper bag. I also will grab some golden rod flower tops and place them in a paper bag . When I get home, I put the bags in a cool dry place (out of humidity) and within a week, the flower tops are dry and the inside of the milk weed pouchesare also. I take these with me to my stand and I let em fly. And it doesn't cost me anything.

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
It's normally cold when I hunt deer in Nov. here. I watch my breath.
I've seen others put a fine talc like powder in small squeeze bottles and puff out small abouts of powder. As long as it's not scented powder, it seems like a good way. |
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I watch the weather channel before I leave for my stand, then watch for flags or wind socks on my way there.
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
tie a piece of string on the end of stabilizer
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
what do i use? the weather channel!!! ditto GregH !!!
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Around a lot of the food plots I hunt I tie a couple of pieces of flagging tape. That way I know what the wind is doing in the area the deer are. They don't pay the flagging tape any attention. A quick look at the weather channel before I go lets me know which plots should be best for hunting that day.

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
One way to check the wind is just lick the end of your poiting finger.
Ans hold it up in the air you can feel the direction the wind is blowing. This is JMHO |
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I USE A SMALL ROUND PLASTIC CONTAINER (ABOUT 1/2" HIGH BY 1" AROUND)WITH A 1/4" HOLE IN THE LID AND I PUT MILKWEED SILK (DRIED)INSIDE. THIS CAN BE FOUND IN ABUNDANCE IN THE FALL.ANYTIME I WANT TO CHECK THE WIND I JUST PINCH THE SILK STICKING OUT OF THE HOLE AND PULL AND LET IT FLOAT AWAY. IT DOES NOT DISAPPEAR LIKE DUST AND YOU CAN WATCH THE AIR CURENTS FOR A GREATER DISTANCE.

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I tie a piece of thread to my stabilizer with a small breast feather from a turkey on the end. Works for me...
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
I use the Kestrel 4100, mainly when I am at the range to find the windspeed and direction, but will use it hunting.
|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
Cigarettes...

RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?

|
RE: What do you use to check the wind direction when hunting?
A couple years ago on rifle opener here in Minnesota, it was -20 F. It wasn't hard at all to figure out which way the breeze was coming from.
