Choke for slugs
I just bought a Benelli Nova 12ga but don't have the money for a rifled slug barrel right now...what type of choke should I use to shoot rifled slugs? I have a full and an Improved cylinder but I was under the impression that I couldn't use either of these for slugs...would modified work?

RE: Choke for slugs
improved will work fine, as will cylinder and skeet choke.

RE: Choke for slugs
I dont recomend using any choke in any shotgun while shooting slugs.

RE: Choke for slugs
I had a buddy that was shooting full choke 12ga.3 inch slugs and he shot, bending the barrel, didnt know it, shot again and it blew up on him! not what i would recomend.

RE: Choke for slugs
Improved cylinder is good for rifled slugs. Make sure you have something there to make sure you don't mess up the threads on your barrel.

IC or modified will work. Try both to see which is more accurate with a particular load. My mossberg was more accurate with the modified choke in it. DO NOT shoot your screw in choke gun without a choke in it. They were not designed to be shot this way, especially with slugs. Probably says it in big red letters right in the manual;).
You can shoot most rifled slugs with a full choke, but they usually are not that accurate. Anything more than a full choke I wouldn't do it. Paul |
RE: Choke for slugs
You may also be able to get a rifled choke tube for it, I have one for my browning and I know remington makes one as well. You will have to shoot Sabots if you go this route though.
