RE: Crack of the rifle?
I shot 3 times at a deer with my flintlock this year before it took off. There were 2 of them and neither of them seemed bothered at all. A rifle makes a sonic boom. Maybe that's what scares them off.

Bill, ask any squirrel hunter who uses a .22 rimfire and they'll tell you that sun-sonic cartridges are best because they don't scare the squirrels away as much as high velocity rounds. I prefer the Remington's Subsonics because their high velocity Hornets and Cyclone types scare the game.
Most centerfire deer rifles have the same affect on squirrels as well as deer - the sonic boom easily gets a reaction due to the high frequency noise. Heaven is best viewed from a deer stand at sunrise in the forest Favorite Sticker: Vegetarian is Indian for Lousy Hunter |

RE: Crack of the rifle?
I too have seen a doe shot at with a ML (someone else shot) that didn't run. And I also shot at a doe with a ML, and 2 other does didn't run. So, perhaps there is a good chance that a deer wont run at the sound of a ML. Too bad we have to tag one before shooting the next one, eh?
