HUGE HUGE HUGE PA Buck!!!!!!!

Today I was out sitting in my treestand watching to see what kind of deer I could see. I figured that they would be moving since the temp was in the low 40's and the snow was all melting. Anyways, at about 4:15, I looked up and saw movement above me. There is a powerline above me, and on the top side is a REALLY thick brush patch. I caught movement in it and put my binoculars up. I saw the biggest buck! It is a main frame 12 point. It has probablly a 23 inch outside spread. The tines are probablly close to 11 inches each. Anyways, it has a drop tine on each side that are probablly around nine inches each. It has two kickers off the left G-2 that are about 4 or 5 inches long and one kicker off the right side that is probablly close to 4 inches long. The antlers were VERY VERY white. The droptines on the other hand were VERY dark (why is this). The total points that I counted was 17. I am figureing that it is going to be close to 180" class. It is ENOURMOUS. It got up from a small little circle of crab apples surrounded by green briars, walked about 20 yards towards a the main road, which was only about 60 yards from the deer and bedded down. This thing is huge. I can't believe what this will area will be like IF Alt's plans work. I saw another big buck tonight on the way home from visiting my grandfather at the hospital (he is doing REALLY good and should be out in a couple of days, he looks better than he has for months) anyways though, I was comming up the small airport I live by and their was a BIG 10 point standing down by the runway. It was probablly 20 inches wide and it probablly had 7 inch tines. The neat thing about this buck is that all three tines on each main beam (not including the brow tines) were the same exact height. It looked weird. Anyways, sorry for the length, I just wanted to share that with you guys. I might try to get some pics of that buck before he drops his antlers and I am going to have some SERIOUS shed hunting to do this year. (Does anyone know when bucks in the southwestern part of Pennsylvania drop their antlers) Thanks guys.

Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

Buck Magnet:
That’s great you got an opportunity to witness something like that. The bucks will start dropping their antlers any day where you are, if some of them haven't already. Pennsylvania definitely has the possibility of growing huge whitetails...when all of the 1.5 year olds don't get pounded in the first week of gun season, and a couple more does are shot. I only wish New York could have gotten Alt to help manage our deer herd. I think that the best thing that NY can do is start giving out doe tags. As is, you already have to apply for them. I applied for 2, both in different management zones (one in 4A and and one in 4G - both about 40 miles west of Albany). I didn't receive any. The areas have 20+ deer per square mile. I would give anything for them to give out more doe tags, even if it meant not shooting any bucks for a few years. The forested lands already have no under story due to the deer eating everything. Giving more doe tags would not only help the deer herd (even though the #'s of deer would be lower), but also it would help ALL other game species, as well as non-game species. There are not the numbers of "under story" songbirds in the area anymore, because there is nothing there for them to eat! Alt's plans WILL work for managing a healthier heard. Trophy deer will only be a byproduct. Although I believe 1:1 ratio is impossible. A 2:1 ratio is more reasonable.
Good luck finding the sheds, and trying to photograph him. If you do get him on film, you'd better post them for all to see.

Cheers,
Rob

I think the bucks in PA are bigger than they were a couple years age.

I hope you find the sheds Buck Magnet. It only goes to show you we do have big bucks in Pa.I would be willing to bet that buck found a safe hiding place all gun season and never moved untill after dark.

Buck Magnet, on your question why was the rack white but the drop tines were dark.I believe when he was rubbing his rack the drop tines don't get rubbed because of their position on the rack there fore the normal rack would get white from rubbing and the drop tines would remain dark.

I bet that the spot I saw him in was his safe haven. It is right beside a main road. It can't be more than 90 yards long and 30 yards wide. It is REALLY thick. I was in their between archery season and rifle season checking it out and there were rubs everywhere. The body on the deer wasn't as big as I thought it would have been. It was probablly around 230# live weight. The thicket he was in would be perfect. Their is a little spring running through it that always has water in it, there are apple trees all around it, and the top side of the thicket leads into corn and alfalfa fields. I will probablly go back this evening and try to get some pics of him. He was an AMAZING animal. I am just glad that I got to see him!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

mauser06, no I wasn't bow or muzzleloader hunting, I tagged out already. I was just doing my normal and trying to see what kind of deer are left. One good thing is yesterday was the last day of late season archery/muzzleloader season so he doesn't have to worry about hunters until next year!
