I have aaquaintance that used a .223 to kill a 150lb 8 pt at about 125yrds. Although I don't recomend it. I feel that a larger gun would do a more affective job under many circumstances. You would hate toloose a beautiful buck because your gun didn't do the job. But thats just my opinion. What does everyone else think?

Come'on guys this is getting a little repetitive!!!! Every gun made can kill a deer, its shot placement......So the better question would be "Do you think shooting a deer in the heart will bring it down?" Or may be "Would you recomend shooting a deerin the hind quarters?" All this .243 and .223 stuff is getting old, If your 10 years old ya those are great rifles to get your son or daughter started with but if your a grown man use a bigger rifle.

A .223 just doesn't cut a big enough swath to do the damage that I'd like to see on a deer. I'm looking for massive hemmorhaging and tissue damage if I were to ever gun hunt again.
We of course shot that caliber in our M-16's when I was in the service; rumor has it that the caliber wasn't designed to kill, but to maim. That way, when you hit an enemy soldier, it took him out and one of his buddies who had to carry him. Not sure about the veracity of that rumor, but I think it speaks to your question about this being effective to ethically put down big game. In a word, no. Will it? Absolutely. But there's better calibers out there for that purpose.

A.22mag will kill a deer if you put it in it's ear! Hell, it will kill a 2000 pd bull if you put it in his forehead.
Are you a sharp shooter 100% of the time or hope you don't just wound the animal and it will wonder off some where and die not to be found?
To answer your question, Yes a .223 will kill a deer, but I would use a .243 or .260 before I would use a .223.

These threads always turn for the worse. Sooo stupid!Hunt with what you want to. Who cares what anyone thinks. I dont recommend a 223, but 243 will do the job fine. Everybody wants to be "da man" whether its using the biggest rifle or the smallest rifle. No one gives a sheit what anyone else uses. It's not a popularity contest, it's deer hunting. You only look cool in your eyes. No one thinks youre mr cool because you use a 22lr or a 30-378 to hunt. People might think youre stupid, but cool is the last thing theyll think. People should get thaqt thru their heads.
