Ridges?
Do big Whiteail bucks travel along ridge tops?
|
RE: Ridges?
Generally, most deer travel about 1/4 to 1/3 of the distance below the ridge tops.

RE: Ridges?
If you can find a shelf just below the ridge line you have a pretty good place for a stand.

RE: Ridges?
Depends... I would rather hunt a ridge during bow season especialy if it had acorns on it.

ORIGINAL: MikeVT If you can find a shelf just below the ridge line you have a pretty good place for a stand. Shhhhhh........Everyone MikeVT doesn't know what hes talking about.;)Just ignore those shelves and all my stands on them. But in all honesty I have to agree with this. It seems like when the bucks start to cruise they travel up and down these and most of them that I have huntedare within 15 yards and about 40-50 yards from the top of the ridge. |
RE: Ridges?
Thanks. There are a couple narrow ridges (about 10 yds wide) where I hunt that I have in mind. Are the deer typically traveling on the down wind side of the ridge?
|
RE: Ridges?
Probably , they like to have the wind at their back sometimes so that they can smell anything sneaking up from behind , this leaves their eyes and ears free to scan ahead .

RE: Ridges?
Do bucks tend to travel up and down hills or accross them?
|
RE: Ridges?
Again, deer will normally take the path of least resistance. depending on the steepness of the terrain, they will mostly do as Mike said, they will follow the hillside, a few feet down from the ridge.
