I think the bigger bullets at lower velocities will not hurt them as bad as the faster lighter bullets. But yea, it'll put a hurtin on them either way.I myself wouldnt want to fight the recoil when any of the rifles you listed will do it. Even the 22-250, though I would'nt recommend it either.

You ever herd the saying " if it aint broke dont fix it". All the guns you listed are plenty for deer sized game!!! I my self have a 270WSM and i shoot 250lb deer up in Minn. with no problems. That 338is to much gun for deer, plane and simple.

RE: .338 mag

I don't think you'll notice much difference in damage between a 338Win and 270/30-06/7Mag on deer.

Yes, there is much more energy, but not any more velocity. And velocity is what creates widespread destruction and devistating wound channels.

You'll really notice a difference on much larger animals, like Kodiak or Moose because they are big enough to absorb all that extra energy. Remember, once the bullet passes though, which all of those will on a deer, all the remaining energy doesn't matter b/c it's not on target anymore.

If you are looking for the most dramatic effect possible, try the 200 Gr Win BST at 2950 fps.

I have a very good friend that killeda 6 pointer in WV with his 338 mag and had to throw away several pounds of shoulder meat. I'm not sure what round he was using but he said it really tore him up.

He went out the next year and bought him a smaller rifle based on his experience.

IMO it's too big. But look on the bright side, you won't have to track much!

RE: .338 mag

I have killed many deer with the 338 using anything from 200 gr BT to 250 grandslam bullets. I just loaded 180 gr Nosler accubond for my dad and I think they will work well, Bottom line they all do damage but you will have much more with the more fragile lower gr .. If you are worried about damage use a tough high gr bullet such as the tbbc or the x bullet ..
