I have a buck in the freezer that says you're wrong .
I got it with a 50 cent Foster slug shot through a smoothbore .
You can take a deer down with a .22 if you hit the right spot , placement kills , not caliber .

I would not shoot much over 75 yards, but it will kill deer. I got my first deer with an Ithaca single shot 20 gauge my second year hunting.

Ive killed a lot of deer w/ a 20. Its a perfect slug gun! you get much better groups and consistency w/ a 20. Ive also killed them over 100 yds w. that gun. Its a browning gold w/ slug barrel and scope. Its my QDM gun... haha never killed a buck w/ it, but ive taking over 20 does w/ it.

20 gauge slug in the chest at less than 100 yards will put a deer in the freezer with no problem

I would prefer the 20 over the 12 actually. The 20 is every bit as capable as the 12 guage, if not more so.

My first two deer were shot with a Ithaca Model 37 Feather Weight 20 ga. Both deer a doe and 250Lb. Buck went straight down. Both deer were shot within 55 yards though. I still love that gun.
