Nice one for the freezer!
Just plucked a nice one for the freezer today. First day of our shotgun season. Not a big one but healthy 6 pointer. It's the only day I got off to gun hunt and I got him at 9:00 am.
Stalked up on 1 doe. It took a small trot away from me. I then walked toward where I saw it come out and another doe and probaly the same one snorted me out. I thought I had it for today but tried a couple of bleats and grunts. 3 minutes later here comes this 6 pointer just 30 yards. 1 shot with the Rem 870 special purpose with 4x Leopold using the Rem 3" Magnum Sluggers and it went down in it's tracks.
It's funny because when I finally got into my spot first thing this morning I went to reach for my gun that was still in it's sock, I felt something loose. It was the scope mounts. I just sighted it in 3 weeks ago and everything seemed fine. The only thing I can think of was I had it out in the truck over night and maybe the tempurature change did something to loosen the screws. I didn't want to spook the deer by taking a practice shot but I didn't have a choice so I took one shot and it was 4" low at 35 yards so I made the elevation adjustment on the scope and that was that. It hit that buck right where I aimed.
I was pretty far in the woods too but the spot where I shot him was only 20 yards from a good four wheeler trail. Just the right size for the old S10 Baja so I drove right up to it and loaded it right in the back of the truck.
probably about 140lbs dressed but minimal damage and probably the smallest rack buck I've ever taken; a whopping 7" spread.
It was a good day....
GOD BLESS
